Not entirely correct, it is still very popular winter's game in rural Indian Punjab, that said, Thappadan (slapping) wali Kabaddi has been banned for a while now, main reason, it leads to so many fights amongst Kabaddi players and their supporters. I attended the Kabbaddi World Cup in Punjab, India won the final on the last raid as Chisti was stopped by a guy named Yadu (Yadwinder Singh) if my memory serves me correct.
That said, only rural Indian Punjabis play this game, rest of the India plays other Kabaddi.
You can never take kabaddi out of a real Punjabi. You may already know this, played by Punjabis (predominantly us Sikhs) in US, Canada and Australia, it was biggest attraction at recently concluded Sikh games in Adelaide, Australia.
On topic, Gama Pehelwan used to be a household name in Indian Punjab. Even in my school days in 90s, if someone boast about their strength, we used to say, aya vadda Gama Pehelwan.
PS: When I read my response before sending, it looks like I agreed with you, anyway, wasted 5 mins writing it so why not post it
