Future jawans to face psychological test - Nagpur - City - The Times of India
NAGPUR: People lining up at army recruitment rallies to be future jawans may have to undergo a test of their nerves before joining services. In light of several incidents of soldiers committing suicide and fratricide in recent times, the army has reverted to its earlier decision to have psychological tests for the candidates turning up to join as soldiers too.
The move, introduced last year, was withdrawn after initial stages of implementation. Sources said the tests were stopped in order to be modified and reintroduced. Recruitment rallies, being held from next year onwards may have a component of psychological tests also, said a senior official involved in the recruitment process.
It was introduced following recommendations by Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), a wing of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). So far, only those appearing for inter-views before the Services Selection Board (SSB) to join as officers had to take the psychological tests. "It will be a written test but the questions are expected to be different from that for the officers. For the soldiers, it will be mainly to assess stress bearing capacity. A soldier is subject to a lot of emotional strain while being posted in remote areas fighting insurgents. This often leads to suicides or jawan running amok gunning down colleagues or even superiors. The test is expected to judge such traits in personality," said the official.
In case of an officer, the leadership qualities are also assessed through the psychological test, he added. Defence analyst Brigadier Gurmeet Kanwal said there were chances that the authorities may face difficulties in managing the affair given the magnitude of candidates turning up for
