Has the PAF looked into sourcing their aircrafts from other vendors? I know there were talks of procuring the Gripen some time back. Also what about going with more Chinese platforms?

If its no from US then its pretty much no from everybody, leaving only one option china or maybe even russia.

Gripens are still on the table, the day US finds out we are going for Russia, First India woun't like it and then US might come to the table again for talks. So all in all are sitting in a good position for now or you might say we are sitting at the top of the table.

Sir, until few decades back, Chinese fighters ( F-6 , F-7 ,A-5 etc ) were lacking in avionics, metallurgy, aircraft-pilot interface, instrumentation, engine thrust and many other technical aspects…Therefore ,while PAF had good number of low tech Chinese fighters, but it was always looking towards West for the Hi-tech ones….But in the past 10 years or so, we have witnessed a marked improvement in the quality of Chinese fighters e.g. JF-17, J8, J10 and many other future projects…Their fighters may not be 100% compatible to the western ones, but slowly and gradually , Chinese are getting there , and the way they have excelled in everything else, I wont be surprised if they catch-up the west in this race as well very soon…

We have been ditched and abandoned too many times in the past by west ( due to our own stupid policies and leadership).....May be its about time that PAF should start looking north or north-east instead of west for her future needs… ….And, Its not only military field, Pak-China are already co-venturing in many other fields and I am sure that with many common interests, its time that we learn from our past experiences and explore the full possibilities’ of cooperation with China…

Except F-16s that are already in pipeline, I would prefer future PAF with Chinese hardware...your opinion please..

Sir Muradk and X_man
The million dollar question is do we have to go for Gripen and would it give us any advantage over what we are going to procure. Yes if F16 s get denied to us, then there may be a case for it.
I would want someone to explain to me what is the advantage of getting Gripen that we cant develop with the Thunder and J10s.
Two bits of tidbits from Sino defence.com . Firstly China is actively working on DRFM.Secondly a whif from someone regarding the recently announced EW set for F16s. Apparently it containd DRFM as an integral part.

I like us sitting on the top of the table. :smokin:

Sir the production of PAF's block 52 has already been started with first aircraft being expected early next year. What makes you think that US' next government will cancell the deal when we're repeatedly assured by Bush's administration that she'll not make the same mistakes as in the past, i.e. imposing fresh sanctions on F-16's. :undecided:

.
The Gripen uses an American engine so that might lead to US pressure on the Swedes in the event of a sale attempt to Pakistan.

.
I think the million dollar question is how are we paying for these aircrafts?
if the money is coming from the US then we can only get US aircraft.
No way US pays 5 billion to Swede company.
