Some years ago there was a nice Indian TV serial called Ishq Ka Rang Safed in which young Hindu widow Dhaani ( played initially by the pretty Eisha Singh -
pic ) is forced to live a cloistered life in house for widows in Benaras instead of being allowed to remarry despite being young. The hero of the serial arrives and slowly makes her shed her depressed life. The serial depicts depicts the reality of the general culture in India.
The practice of sati ( burning the widow on her husband's pyre ) was last publicly known in 1987 - the Roop Kanwar case. It happened forty years after Independence whereas such things should have been stopped at the dawn of Independence.
