KNM Helge Ingstad“ sank deeper in the water during night to Tuesday, photos made public by the Norwegian Defense show.

Tuesday morning, most of the navy ship is under water.

Last Thursday morning while it was still dark, “KNM Helge Ingstad” and the giant oil tanker “Sola TS” collided in Hjeltefjorden, north of the Sture crude oil terminal in Øygarden municipal in Hordaland on the west coast of Norway.

The warship, one of Norway’s five top modern frigates, was on her way home to Haakonsvern naval base after participating in NATO’s large-scale exercise Trident Juncture.

It is still a mystery why the well-equipped warship couldn’t avoid colliding with the 250 meters long oil tanker just north of the oil terminal. The weather was good, the waters in the area has real-time shipping control systems, there was radio-contact between the vessels up front. And, maybe the biggest unanswered questions: Why couldn’t the easy-to-steer frigate, with all its radars and sensors, manage to change course?

While an official investigation is launched by the marine department at the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board (AIBN), the navy in cooperation with others have worked around-the-clock to secure the wrecked frigate. 10 wires were bolted to the rocks onshore, but several of the wires were broken during the night to Tuesday.

The photos from the Defense shows that only the radar-tower of the frigate is over water. The warship still has all weapons on board.

Norwegian newspaper VG has publishedradar plots and the VHF radio recordings between the Vessel Traffic Service, the frigate and the oil tanker in the minutes before, during and after the fatal crash. The conversations were in Norwegian.

. . . .
Sir ,What is the price of this frigate?

This frigate looks like pretty badass.
Somewhere around 500 Million USD, if the entire cost of the program is divided among the 5 ships. And these ships were pretty much state of the art.
Sadly I don't know much about Norwegian or Scandinavian militaries. But it is a big loss.

. .
There is any casualty?
None, hopefully.

7 Sailor were injured, it was due to the quick thinking of the Captain, he (or she, this I don't know) deliberately ran the ship aground to stabilise the ship and facilitate an effective rescue. However, what the captain did eventually doom the ship, as she is taken water and listing heavily when she was aground.

The ship sank and classified as a Hull Lost, source said it is still salvageable tho, but even if it does, the repair fee are not going to be cheap.

List price for the ship is 510 millions USD, total project cost is 21 billions kr (About 2.5 billions USD)

The ship is build by Spanish Navantia, based on the Alvaro de Bazan class Frigate design, it is an AGEIS frigate, armed with AN/SPY-1D radar, and with a 8 cell quad pack RIM-162 missile, the radar and missile package was state of the art.

Thankfully no loss of life.
Also TIL running aground a ship is actually a pretty good way of dealing with hull damage that could potentially sink that ship (this case is a bit more unfortunate).
Quick thinking by the captain indeed.

Well, the Captain sacrifice the ship to save the crew, the ship was taken on water, so running her aground and evacuate the crew would mean no one left to correct the listing, which mean it will eventually sink.

Yes, I think the Captain did pretty good under this circumstance. But sad truth is, he or she is likely to be relief from duty and would be lucky if he or she have another command

Could've been a lot worse, he would've had to stand answerable to loss of precious life. At least he'll sleep easy after a few months.

Saving the ship or the crew, the captain is doomed either way, I am not saying the captain is bad, incompetent or anything, i would do what he does, run the ship aground and save the men, but this is a rock and a hard place kind of situation. Also, the captain have the responsibility to get both the ship and the crew in this situation in the first place.

So, yeah, we should count our blessing that no one had died in the collision, the US lost 17 men in 2 collision just earlier this year.

.
someone needs to answer a lot of questions. such a high tech war ship cannot avoid being hit by a very large oil tanker, man I mean wtf!!!

*INS Betwa tips over*

the ship was in contact with tanker over radio , they knew each ones location , the ship was warned if they don't do something the accident is imminent and they still failed to do something , it's certain that somebody must answer a lot of question.

Well, according to International Maritime Law, a collision at sea usually would put both side at fault, because it stated that if one party failed or cannot response to the call, the other party are then responsible for avoiding the incident.

Well, should let the investigation run its course, then we probably will know something, otherwise its too soon to put blame on any one side on this.
