Three French soldiers have been killed in Libya.
“Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian regrets the loss of three French officers who died while on mission in Libya,” the ministry said in a statement. He praised “The bravery and devotion of the French military personnel who, each day, are carrying out dangerous missions against terrorists, France 24 reported (Main Video).”
The soldiers are the first Western military casualties officially confirmed since the official admission that special forces operators were working on the ground in Libya in a “secret war” earlier this year. (See Below)
A group called the Benghazi Defence Brigades claimed to have shot down the aircraft.
“At this moment we are carrying out dangerous intelligence operations in Libya,” Hollande said, France 24 reported.
“Three of our soldiers, who were involved in these operations, have been killed in a helicopter accident.”
“Special forces are there, of course, to help and to make sure France is present everywhere in the struggle against terrorists,” French official spokesman Stephane Le Foll said.
France has had jets flying reconnaissance missions over Libya “for some time” according to French officials. The day previous to that admission, Libya had reported to AP that a French reconnaissance helicopter had been shot down, forcing the French officials who have hesitated to admit the involvement of Special Forces in Libya to come out in the open.
The French, U.S. and British militaries, have been backing Libya’s UN backed unity government in battling Islamic State fighters. IS has established a new headquarters in Sirte, Libya and operates other locations in the country looking for new oil revenue and other resources since having been driven in large part from Iraq and Syria.
