French govt may lift Sikh turban ban on India's plea

CHANDIGARH/NEW DELHI: India may have found a novel way of persuading France to lift the ban on Sikh turbans by invoking Europe's deep-seated fear of terrorism.

According to minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur, India has taken up the issue of French authorities taking photographs as identity markers and conveyed to Paris that if Sikhs are photographed without turbans, it would create a faulty database.

Kaur said the Indian demand of allowing turbans in France was under active consideration and the matter was likely to be resolved soon.

"The plea that we have taken is that the French government is taking photographs and fingerprints as identity markers. However, if Sikhs are photographed without turbans, then they are accumulating wrong records because normally, a Sikh will always wear a turban," Kaur said.

Kaur, who was in Chandigarh on Saturday, said the fact that a turbaned Sikh — PM Manmohan Singh — was a chief guest in France recently was a strong message by the French government that it was not averse to turbans.

"The matter is being pursued and we are hopeful it will be resolved," she added. In March 2004, the French Parliament had passed a law banning all ostentatious religious symbols and signs in all public places such as schools, hospitals and town halls.

So far, all attempts made by Sikhs to convince the French government have failed.

The 4,000-strong Sikh community in France maintains that it needs a commitment in writing from the French government ensuring that Sikh children who have graduated from the French education system will be free to work in any government job with their turban.

It remains to be seen though whether India's appeal is taken seriously because even in 2006, the Sikhs had appealed to then President Jacques Chirac against a court ruling, which made it mandatory for them to remove their turban when being clicked for a driving licence photograph.

. . . .
hmmm seems not possible here

first about laws i can remember this story:
Un Sikh réclame le droit au turban
A sikh was going to European commission to complain and go court against French state ! he lost the court. In England was the same : he lost too.

There is another story about school and Indian associations were saying that sikh was different than muslims or jews or christians , who are not allowed to show a sign of religion inside a public school They wanted that them they would be allowed because their case would be different. of course they were not allowed.

No chance to success ;)

And if it happens then i think other groups should also be granted the same right to other groups too.

.
and if the whole of Muslim Ummah unite they will never lift the ban for Hijaab unless they find their own interest in it

why imagination?
i am fluent in French and i read news everyday. I am living there .
Sarkozy..is the name .

I already said you. A few years ago as i showed someone complained against French state for this same matter and he lost to the court and the European court too ! I gave you the most famous newspaper link above
so why the hell are you speaking about imagination???

you don't understand what is happening there
The French knowing a crisis and the laicite spirit is much stronger than last years. No scarf in school for muslims , no scarf or any sign on the face or on the hair (yes you read well: there is a law as described in the article that for identity you should have nothing hiding your hear). if you allow it here for sikhs , immediately muslims will say about segregation and ask for them too.
and in france there is really strong part of people who will kill themselves for laicite .

So let me have doubts.
Of course personnaly i would agree with this but the problem is not being tolerant to sikhs. The main problem is that today in France there is already a big problem with consideration of muslims (burqa, identity talks, mosques ). in any society there should be a peaceful environment. with a law allowing only sikhs it would be a hell here and with a law for all allowed to wear something the laic people will be terribly upset ;) and more important Sarkozy needs the extrem right ring for votes. And he just had a very very bad result of the week end elections.

. .
Yes Yes go for it.. It is unfortunate but this will help Muslim women claim their ebaa on the same grounds.

I often get this realization that Muslims are indeed at that stage where we are as worthless as dry leaves of a tree as told by Prophet Muhammad SAWW.

Muslims, its time to stand up. Please do! It all starts with one little step. One very little one!

Le Figaro - France : Douze propositions pour renforcer la laïcité
To let you know about what is happening there
i give you translation of this article
Haut Conseil à l'Intégration is part of minister of integration
They are people who think about how to apply the principles of the republic and the duties of any French people or people who want to become French nationality
here they were working in a document to say what should be changed in the principles of laicite because as they say the society changed and should be not only considered the public places
islam is mostly showed as very active religion is social matters and makes the most to speak about

So here it is:
al public places should be without any sign of religion
but as well the universities should be included (now it was tolerated)
they say students coul wear scarf because it would make too much noise to forbid it in university but any teacher is not allowed
they say Islam is the one which is most active for making social and public obligations
schools for children: forbidden for any sign. but history of any religion should be teached and this should be effective
equality between a man and a woman should respected and man and woman should always not be separated (in school university or any public place)
above for exemple there were fewx problems that a man was insulting and beating male doctors because they were touching their wife so it made a hell of problems . because of some stupid people.
in any company should be a number of days of hollidays to replace the catholic ones so any religion could be respected
there should be no sign that France is cut in pieces, cut in communauties. That's why (they say) we are not laicite fanatics but we want to keep our principles of laicite to be.

hope my english is not too bad ;)
