The French defense procurement agency (DGA) has formally inducted the ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS) developed air defense management centre in 3D (CMD3D) system into operational service with the French Armed Forces.
The system served as an integral part of the protective shield deployed by troops during the country's Bastille Day celebrations on 14 July 2012.
The system was ordered by the DGA to help provide the country's troops with a ground based air defence operations centre (GBADOC) capability, to safeguard land forces and airbases from a wide range of air-launched threats.
Previously called Martha, the CMD3D is a command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) system designed primarily to support management of the strategic asset and battlefield area protection.
Equipped with an Air Operations Command and Control system (SCCOA), the system allows for effective command and coordination of anti-air defence assets, such as aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), shells, missiles and rockets against incoming threats.
The system combines the command and control (C2) systems of the army and air force for low, medium and high altitude planning and tasking, in addition to contributing to the safety and security of aircraft within its zone of responsibility.
The new variant of the system, also called the V2Ca, features high-mobility and extended communication capabilities, to serve as a tool for use by both the French Army and the French Air Force.
CMD3D has successfully demonstrated its ability to efficiently coordinate short, medium and long-range surface-to-air defence systems, including SAMP/T, Hawk, Crotale NG and Mistral missiles, during the air force's air defence exercise, called NAWAS, in March 2012.
The national and international drills have confirmed the system's high level of interoperability for use during coalition operations on national territory and in remote theatres.
