Supporters of French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn are hoping their man can go from inmate to candidate - but he'll have to do it quickly.
Word that the Manhattan sexual assault case against the 62-year-old Frenchman was collapsing raised hopes that Strauss-Kahn could resume his presidential run.
"If he's freed, Dominique should be called on to play a major political role in France," Socialist Party leader Jack Lang said on French television.

Strauss-Kahn was one of the front-runners for the Socialist nod to run for president before his May arrest. Socialist candidates have until July 13 to declare, with the primary set for October.
Backers of Strauss-Kahn asked for a delay in the election process if it turns out he will not face charges of sexually assaulting a maid in a pricey Midtown hotel.
"If Dominique Strauss-Kahn is cleared, I ask the Socialist Party to suspend the primary process," said party member Michele Sabban.
Before his sudden arrest, polls indicated Strauss-Kahn was the leading candidate to defeat incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy in next May's election.
Even if his political aspirations are ruined, friends of the Frenchman were thrilled by word that he could avoid prosecution in New York.
Many in France had criticized the U.S. media and public for assuming that Strauss-Kahn was guilty. Polls indicated the French public believed the politician was possibly the victim of a set-up.
Socialist Party head Martine Aubry said word that the case could be dropped brought her "immense joy."
"I hope that the American justice system establishes all the truth ... and allows Dominique to get out of this nightmare," she said.
Leon Lef Forster, a longtime friend and lawyer for Strauss-Kahn, said he welcomed the news.
"Those who know Dominique Strauss-Kahn will not be surprised by this evolution of events," he said. "What he was accused of has no relation to his personality. It was something that was not credible."
