TEHRAN – French archaeologist and historian of the Middle Ages Jean-Claude Voisin says that Iranians have been negligent in introducing their country to the world.
Perhaps part of the responsibility for this negligence falls on Iranian embassies and cultural offices, which have failed to introduce Iran as it is, Voisin told the Persian service of MNA in an interview published on Friday.
He added that before the (1979) Islamic Revolution, the national aspect of Iran was highlighted, but after the revolution most of the emphasis was on the Islamic dimension of Iran, however both are precious and moderation can help achieve better results.
Voisin’s pictorial book “Iranian Castles and Fortifications” has been published by Iran’s Alhoda International Publications.
The book contains over 100 photos of Iranian castles and fortifications located in different regions of the country along with Persian and French introductions. Most of the photos are taken by Voisin himself.
Voisin explained that his book contains 100 photos selected from among 4,000 images, which makes it a good pictorial book for tourists.
In addition, the introduction and the notes written for each photo can be a good source for the students and university scholars, he noted.
He also explained that he has studied and worked on military fortifications, and that he prefers to work in this field.
He said that he believes he is just starting on his way despite the high number trips he has already made to Iranian military fortifications.
The engineering and structure of Sassanid era castles will be the topic of his next book.
On wearing a ring bearing an agate gem, the French historian explained that he chose agate since the stone belongs to Iran’s Achaemenid Empire from about 500 BC.
Voisin was Director of the French Cultural Center in Beirut. He was also the director of the French Institute in Tehran (2008-2012) and also served as director of the French Institute of Algiers.
