AJMER: Begum Mehrunissa, wife of
Pakistani virologist Mohammad Khalil
Chishty who is convicted in a murder
case, on Friday pleaded for her
husband's freedom. She requested the
district administration on humanitarian
grounds to allow her to meet her
husband who is in India for the last 20
years. Mehrunissa is in Ajmer with her
daughters Shoa and Tasneem and
grandson Ali.
She said that Khalil has attained 78
years of age and he was renowned
virologist in Pakistan. "Khalil Chishty's
mercy petition under Article 161 of
the Constitution of India is pending
with the state governor since June,
2011. The governor has sent back the
petition in July to the state
government with queries. I am here
pleading to set my husband free," said
Mehrunissa. The petition of Khalil is
pending with chief minister Ashok
Gehlot and it has not yet been signed
by the governor.
Shoa and Tasneem cried and said that
they wanted to see their father, "For
us the years have passed by waiting
for the day we will be able to see our
father," said the daughters. She added
that she was too small when she saw
her father last time and now she
wanted to see and touch him. "My
father is a great scientist and I am
proud of him, whatever he had done
he has been punished for it," the
daughter said.
The family has a visa only for Ajmer
and Delhi and they also requested to
district administration to allow them to
meet Khalil in jail. "I wanted to see
and touch my husband. He has already
been punished enough," added the
wife. She said the family requests
India to give her husband back so that
they could live the ending years of life
together and peacefully.
Khaleel was convicted in a murder
case by the fast-track court No. 1 last
January and sentenced to life
imprisonment with three accused. The
trial was heard on a daily basis after
the daughter of the accused wrote
from Karachi to the law minister for a
speedy trail. The incident which
occurred on April 19, 1994 in the
Dargah Bazaar had shocked the
district and since then has been known
as the Idris murder case.
