PARIS, Nov 23 (Reuters) - French forces have “put out of action” some 30 Islamist militants, possibly including veteran Malian jihadist leader Amadou Koufa, during a raid in the central Mali region of Mopti, the army said on Friday.

The French army, which has about 4,500 troops in West Africa battling Islamist militants, did not specify whether the jihadists had all been killed or taken prisoner. The operation took place with air support on Thursday night, it said.

“At this stage of the evaluation of the operation, it appears that about 30 terrorists were put out of action,” the army said in its statement, adding that Koufa and other prominent militants were probably among them.

Koufa, a radical preacher, inspired the Massina Liberation Front (MLF), a group blamed for a wave of attacks that has shifted Mali’s six-year-old Islamist insurgency from the remote desert north ever closer to its populous south. @Nilgiri Talking about France's military operations in Africa..

France is doing an excellent job and they are showing they are a very credible partner for the region and world when it comes to security assistance that matters.

The French "Barkhane" force and Niger forces carried out a joint air-ground operation near Tongo Tongo (Where US special forces and Niger forces were ambushed last year) leading to the neutralization of dozens of terrorists. 26 weapons and large quantities of ammos were seized. Several vehicles seized.

France must take the alternate mantle to the US and lead Europe when it comes to interantional security. Since Germany won't take the initiative and UK is firmly in US camp, France can be a non-polarising and strong leader of international security against terrorism.

Kudos to the French troops for denting jihadi agenda with such force and single-handedly.

There is a tiny problem. "terrorists" are a natural result of colonial interventions. France invaded Mali in 2012 after the disastrous bombing of Libya in 2012. The place will continue to be in chaos till one way or another the French leave the place

How ironic Turks return back to the lands they owned formerly everybody screams out the Ottomans are coming when its France returning to its former colonies nobody freaks about a French Colonial Empire.

It's not like France is savagely or illegally imposing its military presence in Africa. It does through agreements with official governments of the said countries,in accordance with UN resolutions or because many countries are asking for its presence. It will leave if it's asked to.

.
I highly doubt France will leave because once they leave the Malian army will collapse. France has been able to get the Malian and Niger armies back in working order again.

White worship syndrome.
Dont be surprised if former European colonies spread legs for their former master.

We had this argument before. Nobody outside Turkey and maybe a few nutcases from Pakistan wants the Ottomans.

I love it how the word 'terrorist' is used to describe anyone who doesn't follow your agenda. I assume this is a civil war.

Can somebody tell the rest us, in an impartial manner, exactly what is happenning in Mali and what the French are doing there?

People wanting the Ottomans backs in Turkey is very small, majority of the People dont want a dead empire back.

If Erdogan refers back to the Ottomans is like Putin refering back to the Soviets. Some countries look to the past for glory does not mean they want to revive a dead empire they just want to revive their status for the present by looking back at the past.

If Turkey stays out of trouble and focuses on economic development there might be people in neighboring countries who look to the Turks
