I think they were hopeful the Australian deal would fund the R&D for future designs that they could in turn sell to countries like India. The Australian SSK was suppose to have an American command and control system, and basically everything they have in their own submarines short of anything nuclear. The French were set to learn a lot in the process, but now have to do it all on their own. The Germans and Swedes will advance to the the U-212CD and A26 designs, respectively, and the French will have to collect themselves and catch up with the other European nations that planned to develop on their own.
