French officials said Wednesday that they will not deliver the first Mistral-class amphibious warship that Russia had ordered from Paris as part of a $1.7 billion weapons sale, a strong rebuke after months of aggressive actions by Russia in eastern Ukraine.

French officials said in statement that they assess the situation in Ukraine to be “serious,” and believe Russia’s actions undermine security in Europe. The statement did not say whether France will deliver the ship in the future, but said the conditions for it to do so at this time “have so far not been met,” despite the possibility of a cease-fire in Ukraine.

“The recent actions by Russia in eastern Ukraine are contrary to the basic notions of security in Europe,” the statement said.

The decision marks a turnaround for France, which signaled as recently as Monday that it intended to complete the sale. Pressure had been building on Paris to hold the ship back, however, especially after NATO said it had determined that Russia has sent troops and military equipment into Ukraine.

French officials have spent years defending the arms sale, in which France beat out rival nations like Germany and Spain to sell ships to the Russians. U.S. officials and nations in Eastern Europe had warned long before Russia’s recent actions in Ukraine that bolstering Russia’s navy was a bad idea, and the criticism reached a crescendo in recent days.

depend on Russia’s attitude,” an allusion to its actions in Ukraine.

The deal in question dates to January 2011, and would have provided four of France’s Mistral warships to Russia, whose navy is relatively weak. The first two ships would be built by French contractor DCNS, while the second two would be built in Russia and then delivered to the Russian navy. The ships each carry about 160 troops, and can transport at least 16 military helicopters and landing craft, according to a U.S. Navy assessment.

It's old news from 3 September.

They will deliver it in mid November. Otherwise they'll lose a huge moneys as reparations for contract and the last reputation as a trustworthy contractor.

Shipyards, where were built aircraft carriers and helicopter carriers of USSR stayed in Ukraine.

Awwwww.....poor Russia, no wonder it wants to srew Ukraine badly.:D:P
If Russia wanted it would long time ago re-unite all the lands where people speak Russian, and where the majority of residents stand for reunification with Russia and opposite EU and NATO. Odessa, Nikolaev, Kherson - coastal cities, founded by Russian in the late 18th century on land belonging to nomadic tribes. These ports and shipyards were needed by Empire, and Russia still need them, and Ukraine does not. Cities are dying out, specialists leaving.

Firm Truce in Ukraine Needed for Mistral Delivery to Russia: Paris / Sputnik International

A respected ceasefire and a political roadmap in Ukraine could break the impasse in the Russia-France Mistral deal.

MOSCOW, January 1 (Sputnik) — A stable ceasefire and a political roadmap for crisis settlement in Ukraine are needed for the delivery of Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Thursday.
"This [Mistral delivery] is not possible in view of the conflict, the difficulties encountered in Ukraine. There needs to be in this part of Europe… a respected ceasefire and a political roadmap," Le Drian told Europe-1 radio station.

According to the terms of the $1.5-billion contract signed in June 2011, Paris was due to deliver the first of the two Mistral-class helicopter carriers, the Vladivostok, to the Russian Navy by November 14. However, French President Francois Hollande put the transfer on hold, citing Russia’s alleged role in the ongoing Ukrainian crisis.

Moscow has repeatedly denied its involvement in the Ukrainian conflict and warned Paris that it would face large penalties should it fail to deliver on its contractual obligations.

The current Ukrainian crisis escalated in April 2014 when Kiev launched a military operation to suppress the independence supporters of Luhansk and Donetsk Regions who refused to recognize the coup-imposed central government.
A much-awaited ceasefire agreement, brokered by Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, was signed between the conflicting sides in September. Following the implementation of the ceasefire, both Kiev and the DPR and LPR authorities have repeatedly accused each other of violating the truce.

With the breakup of Russia a lot of capability was lost

Time for Russia to seize these lands back

1-2 billions maximum (800 millions that putin already paid and 251 millions of the cancelation of this deal,in total.)
(and not 3-10 billions like some putin's medias said)
What reputation,we didn't deliver ships and aircrafts to israel, and we lost no reputation.
And... didn't your country refuse to deliver s300s to syria/iran ? it didn't change anything about "russia's reputation" no ?

Russia should demand ship back , just crazy to have russia pay to build ship and not deliver

3 Billion plus Interest on late delivery or refusal to deliver goods as agreed
