France and Germany have announced their intention to work together to develop a new advanced “European” 5th Generation fighter jet which will be the successor to the France’s Dassault Rafales and Germany’s Eurofighter Typhoons. France and German are planning to come up with a Road Map by Mid of 2018.

European fighter jet is still in infancy and a clean slate program which India has been looking for long to help its workforce get enough experience in design and development of advanced 5th generation fighter jet so that it can be helpful to develop its own 5th generation AMCA fighter aircraft.

Lack of Progress on Indo-Russian proposed FGFA 5th Generation fighter jet suggests that difference between two over work share agreements, price and transfer of technology has not lead to any breakthrough even after both concluded a design agreements Nearly Seven Years ago. Since France and Germany are yet to work out basic requirements for development of new European fighter jet it can be predicted somewhat that new fighter jet will be Twin-engined Medium Class Stealth Fighter jet designed for Air-Superiority and Strike Missions just like the predecessor they will be replacing.

France and Germany both have the technology required to develop this new jet and it is expected the new jet will enter production by 2030 and will have continued production line even beyond 2040. While Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale are still getting export orders and technologically are still relevant but growing export orders of American F-35 5th Generation fighter jet will soon lead to sharp fall in its price due to a streamlined production line leading to prospective future customers moving away from 4.5++ Generation fighters like Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale in long run since both are still 80’s designed fighter jets which cannot incorporate Stealth in any future variants .

For India, it could be a win-win situation if a deal for FGFA with Russia is scrapped ultimately and India is able to stay away from American temptation called F-35. If India is able to become third partner country in the project it will bring in required R&D investment money and also come with committed number of fighter jet order. Since the Project is a Clean Slate development of a 5th Generation fighter jet, India can add its required inputs and requirements and will also be able to contribute its own technology for the project and vice versa also receive transfer of technology and along with ownership status to profit from any future export.

its gonna be 6th gen the french and the germans are not interested in 5th gen fighters, we went for the f35b simply because there the only vertical takeoff fighters available.

its just a question of will it be manned or un manned.

Best option for India in my opinion we can't stay behind for too long as China and Pakistan will b Fielding 5th generation aircraft by 2030 or early

I think French are skipping one gen and are directly going to 6th gen fighters. French say Rafale is as good as any 5th gen fighter.

If it's a 6th gen then it will be doubly good to join

Regardless India should HAND THE $5 billion Russia wants for FGFA straight to France & Germany and become FULL 3rd PARTNER of a euro 5th generation project.

GET IT DONE MODI

lot of confusion for india regarding stealth fighter jets!!!

When France did not favor a ToT deal for 4th generation RAFALE, why would France & Germany entertain India in this 6th generation project. Indians should stop dreaming about getting any tech transfer be it F-16 deal with US, RAFALE deal with France or FGFA deal with Russia. They may sell their fighters but will never share the tech.

You are right. Especially the Germans would never accept the participation of India in this project as long as you guys have problems with Pakistan. The German public would perceive such a cooperation as an inappropriate involvement in a potential nuclear war between India and Pakistan. No German politician would risk being accused of taking a side in this nuclear conflict.

all he can do is hug the french and the german pm as even they dont know what there even building, they did not even mention 5th gen fighter only the article. it would be suicidal to start a fifth gen project now. if they wanted to start a fifth gen project then it should have started in the 90's

This aircraft doesn't even exist yet and you're already talking about tech transfer agreements:lol:?

Slow down there. Germany and France initiated this agreement to lessen their reliance on outside technologies, be they from Israel, the US, South Korea or elsewhere and to improve Euro-cooperation and R&D, not to mention to standardize equipment across the continent with missile, tanker, cargo, uav, mpa, and other programs also in the works as pan-European projects. These programs were designed to have input and funding from European countries, not those outside of Europe, India included.

Hold your horses everyone. Wait until the agreements bear fruit and remember, these are being designed to fulfill European requirements, such as replacing the Typhoon, Rafale and Tornado, adding a third party like India or Israel would change the requirements and go against the entire thought process behind this joint development program. Part of what's held up the FGFA has been differences between Russian and Indian requirements and that's a risk France and Germany already have between themselves, but would be magnified by adding another nation such as India.

Like with Meteor, once it bears fruit you may have an opportunity as an export destination, but joining the development is likely a non-starter just based on the criteria surrounding the development of the equipment these programs are designed to do.
you dare question modi!?

the french need time to take in what they just signed up to (dealing with germans) before we even contemplate what is being built. as for us we need to replace the tornadoes with this new fighter which i highly suspect will be unmanned and a successor to the taranis. this will work along side the typhoon which is expected to be around till 2040 which by that time its successor would be ready to take the baton.

I do not think India-Pakistan angle is big a influencer but as @Excalibørk pointed out the pan-European angle is huge.
