Four million tons rice export to fetch $2.5 billion this year

Four million tons rice export to fetch $2.5 billion this year | Business Recorder

Pakistan is likely to export 4 million tons rice till October whereas 3.8 million tons of the commodity has already been exported fetching $2.1 billion for the exchequer. Well-placed sources told Business Recorder on Monday that 1.2 million tons basmati rice and 2.6 million tons non-basmati (long-grain) has been exported so far.

"The rice export season will remain at peak from October to May while in August and September the overall rice export will decrease." "We hope to export 4 million tons rice this year that would bring $2.5 billion for the exchequer," sources said. They said rice production in Punjab may increase from 4 to 6 million tons as the area under the crop has increased by one million acre.

Sources said the overall rice production area in Punjab was 4 million acres that has now increased by 1 million acres because due to the high price of rice in international market, farmers were well-paid by exporters that encouraged growers to increase crop production area. They added that price of rice in international market stands at $520 per ton while it was $465 per ton during the corresponding period last year.

Recent rains in Punjab have proved to be a blessing for major crops such as rice, cotton and sugarcane. Due to the dry weather, cotton crop was being attacked by 'white fly' and 'mites' which could prove to be hazardous for its production in Punjab but the recent rain has increased the humidity in the air. Resultantly, the attack by insecticides on cotton crop has reduced to the minimum and would be completed after a few days," sources added.

They said, "Same is the case with the sugarcane crop which needs plenty of water for irrigation. "Sugarcane is being sowed on 2.2 million acres of land and the recent rains would contribute heavily to the water content in the sugarcane thus increasing the quality and weight of the crop."

Sources said it happened for the first time in the history of Pakistan that as a result of recent monsoon rains, almost 5-6 million acres feet (MAF) of water was available in Punjab for irrigation that went to sea due to non-availability of any dam. Sources maintained that there are almost 1 lac to 1.5 lac electric tube wells in Punjab that were not being used by farmers due to long-hour load shedding. But after the monsoon rains in Punjab, the issue of long-hour load shedding has been resolved and the farmers are using these electric tube wells that would contribute to the high crops yield.

Sources said the per acre yield of rice crop in the country is 26-27 maunds while in the neighbouring countries such as China and India, the production is 40-50 maunds per acre while Pakistan may earn an additional amount of $6-7 billion if the per acre yield of rice is increased.

annual production extimate in 2011 is 5.1 million tonnes ,

means a surplus is 2.6 million tonnes
but exporting 4 million tons ..

means the deficite of almost 1.4 million tonnes this year....

result domestic price hike
