Four ships of the First Training Squadron, Indian Navy – INS Sharda, Gharial, Tarangini and Indian Coast Guard Ship Varuna – are in Port Victoria on a four-day visit.

The visit is part of the build-up towards the Seychelles-India Day Celebrations from October 4-6.

The First Training Squadron is an integral part of the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command, which is responsible for training officers and sailors of the Indian Navy and numerous friendly foreign navies, from their basic courses to their specialisation at various stages of their career. The squadron is tasked with providing basic training to officer cadets and enabling them to earn their ‘sea legs’.

The visit to Port Victoria is aimed at providing a wider exposure to the officer cadets presently undergoing basic training onboard the four ships. During their stay in Seychelles, the cadets will interact with personnel of the Seychelles People’s Defence Forces, the Maritime Training Centre and students of the School of Advanced Level Studies. They will also carry out visits to various industries and places of interest in Seychelles.

At the helm of the squadron is the Senior Officer, 1st Training Squadron, Captain V.K. Sawhney. He is assisted by a team of professional and highly motivated officers and sailors who provide direction, experience and focus to the training curriculum of the officer cadets onboard.

The ships will be open to visitors today from 1000hrs to 1600hrs. Three ships will also carry out surveillance of Seychelles exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from October 4 -8 in sectors selected by the Seychelles Coast Guard.

India and Seychelles share excellent relationship - India's first foreign power projection happened in Seychelles - "Operation flowers are blooming" where INS Vindhyagiri participated in the action. One of my family members was one of the strategizing officers from Indian Navy in Seychelles for this operation.
