Former US Marine Paul Whelan sentenced to 16 years in prison in Russia

A Moscow court has sentenced the former US Marine to 16 years in a high-security prison on charges of espionage. The US Embassy has denounced the closed trial, stating that no evidence had been provided.

There are rumors, US and Russia are considering swapping prisoners: Paul Whelan in Russian prison to be pardoned by Russian President and exchanged for 2 Russians named Viktor Bout and Konstantin Yaroshenko in US prisons who will also get pardon from the US President.

It is noteworthy that officials from both sides are avoiding discussing anything about it.
