Temporary structure over Kalam’s tomb - The Hindu
Updated: August 2, 2015 05:48 IST
In a thoughtful move, the district administration has come forward to erect a temporary structure over the tomb of former President A P J Abdul Kalam who was laid to rest at Pei Karumbu near here on Thursday.

The timely gesture has come as a huge relief to family members, local people and Kalam’s well-wishers who feared that in the absence of even a temporary structure, the place would be exposed to the vagaries of weather. A heavy downpour could wash away the sandy earth in the area where the mortal remains of Kalam were lowered, they feared. A day after the high-profile funeral on Thursday, the place of burial looked forlorn as hundreds of people and students thronged the site to pay their homage.

The district administration has decided to erect the temporary structure to protect the burial site from the vagaries of weather, Collector K. Nanthakumar said. The issue of building a memorial would be decided by the government, he added.

The district administration has also made lighting arrangements at the site, he said. Soon after the funeral, the police had posted round-the-clock armed guardsw at the site and erected barricades around the tomb to regulate the crowd.

After the family members expressed the concern and made a plea, the district administration immediately came forward to erect the temporary structure and “we thank the collector,” Sheik Saleem, grandson of Kalam, said. The contractor who has taken up the work said that a 24 ft x 22 ft metal sheet roof structure would be erected with a six-foot-wide gate for people to enter and pay homage. The structure would be covered with iron mesh.

As it was very hot on Saturday, the work was started in the afternoon, he said adding they would complete the work by Sunday evening. Meanwhile, hundreds of people and students from various parts of the State visited the site for the second successive day on Saturday.

We see mostly Hindus and officials. Muslims don't seem to have liked him much.

Perhaps not in Pakistan but in India he was loved by all Indians. We really aren't a fragmented society as you wish we are. People like the late President (fmr) Abdul Kalam galvanized and united us as a society. You really cannot compare a state funeral to that of a convicted terrorist. This is a funeral of a dignitary and the common man will be kept out of the VIP area. Then again, you are of Bangladeshi origin. It will take ages to teach you about state etiquette and diplomacy etc. If you want to, I could open another thread to explain these things to you

On topic. Rest in Peace Sir. May Allah receive you with splendor. Jai Hind

HC orders clean up of Rameswaram as mark of respect to Kalam - The Hindu
Rameswaram municipality officials directed to file report by Monday on steps taken.

The Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday gave life to an old public interest litigation (PIL) petition pending before it with respect to sprucing up Rameswaram municipality and cleaning up the Ramanathaswamy temple as a mark of respect to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who hailed from the island town.

A Division Bench of Justices R. Sudhakar and V.M. Velumani directed the municipality officials to file a report by Monday on steps taken by them pursuant to a list of suggestions made by three court appointed advocate commissioners — S. Srinivasaraghavan, S.S. Sundar and N. Krishnaveni — on January 7, 2014 after inspecting the municipality.

The Advocate Commissioners had inspected the holy ‘theertham’ sites at the temple and said that sewage from public toilets and commercial complexes near the temple were let into the sea thereby polluting the ‘Agni Theertham’ where hundreds of devotees take a holy dip every day.

“The Agni Theertham is not even conducive and hygienic for the devotees to drench their legs and sprinkle water on their heads,” their report stated and suggested that a water treatment plant in existence should be replaced with a new and effective plant at a far away place. They also stated that polluted water does not enter the sea.

The other suggestions made by the Commissioners included construction of toilets in a vacant space on the eastern side of Agni Theertham, removal of abandoned clothes from the entire stretch of the seashore at least thrice a day, provide sufficient parking place for the vehicles, install sufficient number of dustbins and street lamps and prevent stray cattle and dog menace.

APJ Abdul Kalam's statue unveiled at DRDO unit in Hyderabad | Zee News

Hyderabad: A bronze statue of the late APJ Abdul Kalam was today unveiled here at the residential campus of Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a DRDO unit which the former President had established.

"My mind is filled with so many memories and so many interactions with Kalam right from 1980s. He is the man who established RCI and has seen its transcendence," G Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister, said after unveiling the statue near the Faculty House of RCI campus, where Kalam used to stay.

He noted that it was Kalam who had formulated the country's Integrated Missile Programme and propelled India towards emerging as a missile power.

Reddy said the great visionary's memory and inspirational words would always remain alive in their hearts and keep motivating the scientific fraternity to aspire towards greater heights and set new benchmarks in the years to come.

"His dreams are never-ending. The greatest tribute we can pay him is to fulfil his dreams and realise his vision for the country," he added.

Describing Kalam as "our mentor, a visionary, and a saint", NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat said he had always dreamt of the good of the common man.

Kalam provided such a strong foundation for India's missile technology field that, for years to come, the country would be self-sufficient in this area, he said.

The former President brought in such values among youth that today, every youth gets motivated by the sheer mention of the name "Dr Kalam", added Saraswat, a former DRDO chief.

RCI also organised a Kalam Memorial Science Council wherein Prof D Balasubramanian of LV Prasad Eye Institute delivered a talk on 'Biology of Music'.

Eminent scientists, including RN Agarwal, Prahlada, SK Salwan and several close associates of Kalam from the Missile Complex right from 1982 paid floral tributes to the former President, who passed away on July 27.

Top DRDO officials, including Satish Kumar, Director General (Missiles), were also present for the ceremony.

Preliminary survey of the land at Peikarumbu is being conducted now.

A team of officials from the Centre and State government on Tuesday visited the site of the proposed memorial for former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The memorial will have a library, museum and a meditation centre, said CPWD Executive Engineer Ganesan.

Preliminary survey of the land at Peikarumbu, where the body was laid to rest on July 30, is being conducted now.

“Since the site is situated at a low level we have to bring it to the road level and then build the memorial”, he told reporters.

The demand for setting up a memorial for Kalam at the site had been made by many people including the family members of the former President.

Tamil Nadu government has announced instituting an award in the name of Kalam besides observing his birthday as ‘Youth Renaissance Day’.

Kalam died on July 27 in Shillong and was laid to rest at his native Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on July 30.
