Former DG-Rangers, Lt.Gen Rizwan Akhtar to command the ISI.

Rizwan Akhtar named new ISI chief

The army on Monday promoted former DG Rangers Sindh, Rizwan Akhtar to Lieutenant General and named him the new Director General of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).

Lt. General Akhtar will replace Lt. General Zaheerul Islam who is set to retire in October and is expected to take charge in the first week of November.

Apart from General Akhtar, five other Major Generals were promoted to the rank of Lt. Generals including Hial Hussain, Ghayur Mahmood, Nazir Butt, Navid Mukhtar and Hidayat Ur Rehman.

Their postings are as follows:

  1. Lt. General Hilal Hussain: Mangla Corps
  2. Lt. General Ghayur Mahmood: Gujranwala Corps
  3. Lt. General Nazir Butt: IG, C&IT
  4. Lt. General Naveed Mukhtar: Karachi Corps
  5. Lt. General Hidayat Ur Rehman: Peshawar Corps

It was almost certain that Gen Raheel wanted to promote a Maj General to the post of DG-ISI. It was sure that both Government as well as COAS would like to see an apolitical personality on the post. I was told by one of my friend in close contacts with the government that Gen Butt was the choice of NS after consultations with not only other parties but also persons from media (For the first time in Pakistan). Butt also possessed prior experience of intel ops, which was crucial since Gen Raheel doesn't posses any experience of Intel Ops. But Nawaz having already appointing another butt for DG-ISI previously (Gen Zia ud din Butt), the decision was certain to attract some irk and affirmed the perception that Nawaz only promotes butts and sharifs generals to key posts. So Lt.Gen Rizwan is the last day change after meeting with the army chief and thus going for Rizwan. However, one of Rizwan's key strengths is that he can work in coordination with civilian security infrastructure which may pave a way for ISI opening up to the idea of dysfunctional Joint Intelligent Bureau envisaged by Chaudry Nisar.

If he was the least competent of the lot then he wouldn't have made it to promotion panel in the first place.

You mean to say Jang Group na....so much for the constitutuion----and then you guys say put isi under civilians....

I think Navid Mukhtar would be a better choice for this job but still not a bad choice either. Hope he serves his nation well.
Given his appointment in Karachi, and Former DG's, these guys have had the first hand experience of fighting a war with in the Urban cities - startig with Target Killers, Mafia to Lej and Al Qaeda - He has experience of raising RATS - and carrying out Counter Terrorism operations ---
And most Important thing Liasion with Police, Provincial Govt, Interior Ministry and The Army --- that is why he has been choosen --
Prior experience in ISI is an advantage - but most of the time DG is an Icon people look upto and he sets the strategy ---

What possible Personal Development one could get from this assignment?? Most of the Officers who sut behind a desk are those whose retirement is soon due, one example is of Lt Gen Harron Islam, a man of honor, A commando but was posted as CGS,an administrative role - hence he lost the chances of becoming coas
Is there any particular reason behind this?

Hes same guy na, who was very confident and had inside info that it will be some butt sb ---- so much for investigative journalists

time is the best judge , lets hope he will support only Pakistan's interests and nothing else.....good luck

Thank GOD Army doesn't have racists like you in them

I stand by my comments. Label me a racist or whatever. A bania can never be as good a soldier as your, let's say, a pakhtun can. Period. Such a high post should have multiple criteria to be fulfilled, including race.

You can't be serious, as sheeda tali said Kayani was eating sattu while Raheel sallajeet. :D

By "Sheeda Talli" you mean Sheikh Rasheed do you? Well he's the most beghairat person in Pakistan and also the biggest coward. Why do people take him seriously. He prides himself on having funded Kashmir "Jihad" camp, while is too much of a p**** to go on a Jihad himself. No offense, but I literally hate some Kashmiris like Hamid Mir and Sheikh Rasheed. They promote and propagate Kashmir Jihad all the time, but wouldn't ever go on it themselves. It's like they always need brainwashed kids from KPK and Punjab to fight their wars. "Phattu" log.

And Musharraf turned Pakistan army into a hijra force by giving all the main posts to weak, non-martial people. Remember how they made multiple "peace deals" in Swat, Bajaur etc due to a lack of courage? Remember how they surrendered some 300 soldiers in South Waziristan? Kayani had his flaws, but he did restore Pakistan army's glory. 2009 Swat operation and SWA were the most crucial phases. Had Pakistan army lost or reached stalemate there, Pakistan would be in deep s*** now.

Lets hope that he gives some relief to already troubled PML-N :enjoy:

He won't I guess. Because he is appointed on the recommendation of COAS. And COAS doesn't compromise when it comes to national security matters. He must have bypassed NS on this issue hopefully.

He was appointed by PM on COAS recommendation and apparently he was also the choice of PM as well. So let's hope that we see a good working relationships between them.

Ofcourse he is appointed by the PM. Hopefully & definitely he is not going to please NS like other 'Noora League' supporters.

Not a good pick i believe ...Naveed Mukhtar or Nasser Janjua were the right guys for the job ...Rizwan Akhtar hasn't got that much of a glowing resume too !
Can you provide the readers with a "comparison of the resumes" of the generals you mentioned so that we may better understand how you arrived at the conclusion/s you expressed?

Please do not forget to add "on the recommendation of the COAS" to the appointment of the DG ISI by the PM.
