China vs. America in the Sky: A Stealth-Fighter Showdown Is Brewing

China’s new stealth fighters might one day be able to match their American equivalents in battle, Pentagon and industry officials fear. Indeed, China is showing off its latest Shenyang J-31 stealth fighter at the Zhuhai air show in the Guangdong province. To meet the challenge, the Pentagon needs to continue to buy the F-35 and start developing a future fighter to counter the rising threat.

“The J-31—along with the J-20 [the other Chinese stealth fighter]—is a tangible demonstration of the efforts made by China to counter the significant advantage the U.S. has with the [Lockheed Martin] F-22 and F-35,” said one senior U.S. military official with extensive experience with so-called fifth-generation fighters. “They recognize that fourth-gen airplanes [like the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, Russian Su-27 and so on] are quickly becoming obsolete. The price of admission to a fifth-gen war is a fifth-gen airplane and they get that.”
Indeed some senior U.S. aviators believe that the J-31—which is thought by many U.S. military and industry officials to be based on stolen F-22 and F-35 technology—will eventually be the equal of the American fighters. “I think they’ll eventually be on par with our fifth-gen jets—as they should be, because industrial espionage is alive and well,” as one senior pilot familiar with the F-35 told USNI News.

Even if the J-31 doesn’t sit at 100 percent parity with the F-22 and F-35, it might not matter, because those Chinese aircraft might be able to do enough damage to the U.S. military to make it too expensive to fight. “I think we can probably keep a slight advantage for quite some time, but a slight advantage means significant losses and less of a deterrent,” said one senior Air Force official. “Lets pretend the F-22 confronts current air-to-air threats outside of a SAM [surface-to-air missile] environment and has a 30 to one kill ratio today versus a [Sukhoi] Su-30 or [Shenyang] J-11. When the J-20 and J-31 come around, even a three to one kill ratio advantage becomes costly.”

China is developing the J-20 and J-31 because the F-22 and F-35 are so superior to existing fighters. The Chinese cannot afford to lose thirty jets in exchange for killing a single F-22 any more than the U.S. could if the situation were reversed. “Our competitors know the current reality and are working very hard to avoid the wide gap we have created by investing in those planes,” the senior military official said. “They represent their attempt and creating parity in the skies.”
The senior military official said the very fact that China is developing aircraft like the J-20 and J-31 shows that the Pentagon needs the F-35. “The J-31 should make anyone who questions the need for the F-35 to rethink their logic,” the official said. “Regardless of whatever criticisms you have heard about the Raptor and the Lightning, they are incredible machines that are insanely superior by virtually every metric to anything else flying in the world. They may be complex, expensive and still immature, but they are a quantum leap over every other fighter in our arsenal.”

The senior military official said, however, that while the J-31 looks impressive, there is a lot the United States does not know about its capabilities. “Anyone can make a plane that flies fast and looks stealthy,” he said. “The J-31 looks gorgeous. Aside from the fact it’s an obvious rip-off of the F-35.”

It takes a very long time to develop a stealth fighter—much of that is not because of the aircraft itself, but rather the radar, other sensors and cockpit systems. Developing and perfecting those technologies takes a long time. Further, it takes a long time to perfect manufacturing techniques for an extremely complex warplane like the F-22 or F-35. “The most impressive and important qualities of our fifth-gen fleet are what is on the inside—fused sensors and information dominance,” the official said. “We didn’t develop those over night. It takes a lot of time to get where we are today, which is why we continue to preserve our advantage.”

China will eventually perfect the J-20 and J-31, however—it is just a matter of time. “They are going get there one day, make no mistake,” the senior official said. “It won’t be tomorrow or the next day, but the fact this place is debuting now should tell you something about China’s commitment.”

China recently demonstrated its second fifth-generation stealth fighter, the J-31, for the 10th Zhuhai Airshow held in Guangdong from Nov. 11-16. Dave Majumdar, an American defense expert, thus suggests in Washington's National Interest that the US must put the F-35 into service or develop new fighters to face this challenge.

China has come to realize that fourth-generation fighters such as the J-10, J-11, Su-27 and Su-30 will be obsolete when facing American fifth-generation stealth fighters like the F-22 and F-35, an official from the Pentagon told Majumdar. "The price of admission for a fifth-gen war is a fifth-gen airplane and they get that," the official was quoted as saying. Many US aviators believe that the J-31 was built based on stolen F-22 and F-35 technologies and will eventually be as powerful as the two American fighters.

"I think they'll eventually be on par with our fifth-gen jets because industrial espionage is alive and well," an F-35 test pilot told the US Naval Institute. A senior official from the US Air Force said that an F-22 has a 30-to-one kill ratio versus a Su-30 or J-11 outside of a surface-to-air missile environment. When the J-20 and J-31 enter service with the PLA, even a three-to-one kill ratio advantage becomes costly.

Facing this new challenge, the official suggested those who question the need for the F-35 to rethink their logic. "They may be complex, expensive and still immature, but they are a quantum leap over every other fighter in our arsenal," said he. Believing that China will eventually make the J-20 and J-31 into perfect stealth fighters, the official suggested the United States to learn from China's commitment to upgrading its military technology.

Update : In the presentation J31 used "Optical" sensors to fire BVR at very long ranges - to dispatch many Su30's - it was a devastating performance, the "adversary" aircraft - representing the entity to the east.

Also presented was the "net centric capability" - J31 can operate a swarm of UAV's which have both surveillance, battle damage assessment, attack both air/ground capability, with the 31 acting as a conductor in a symphony.

Also the 31 avionics are going to introduce a revolutionary new ergonomic flight computer which will allow the aircraft to fly itself and allow the pilot to concentrate on the swarm communications.

Some of the above capability will come with the first aircraft others in a series of upgrades/

See the bold above......its is SO over exaggerated!!! The average was like half a squadron before -22 becomes visible to modern avionics. How could a -22 kill 33 jets anyway? It only carries a few missiles. Too many fan boys writing this stuff as experts!

As per documentary shown on Discovery/NAT GEO it was 15-0 in favor of 2 F-22 vs 15 F-15s and to give more firepower to F-22s to take on larger number of foes USAF wanted B-1R version of Lancer which could carry long range BVRs on external hard points (if needed internal too) with very advance EW system on boards and connected with NCW.

Well if you actually look at it carefully. War was imposed on Hitler. He and Stalin collectively attacked Poland. And war was declated only on Hitler and not on Stalin Soviet union.
And He literally decimated His European rivals to pieces. Defeated the united forces of Britan and France. And he thrashed his archrival siezed their capital france. He WON. And you cannot change it. He didnt bombed france he didnt raped Paris he didnt genocided the french.

It was afterwords when Stalin became hellbent on spreading communism in Europe that he had to stop Soviets.
And mind it Soviet union was a monster Hitler did his desperate effort to save Europe from falling to the mighty union and he failed thanks to Uncle Sam and Allies.
And Europe suffered for 50 years on hands of communists.

It's funny that people ASSUMED that J-20 is for PLA exclusively.At least I heard about it only from internet rumours but not official statement. I'm not saying that J-31 is not good but with any chance PAF should go for J-20. J-31 is a AVIC project whereas J-20 is a PLAAF project which is backed up by the entire nation. I know J-20 is more expensive but it is worthy. J-20 has larger payload, better avionic particularly better AESA, and most importantly way more reliable and faster developed engine(WS-15)with larger thrust. Moreover, J-20 (at least 6 prototypes) is way maturer than J-31(1 demonstration only) right now. Yes J-31 will become potent eventually but it takes time, years longer than J-20 perhaps. So if PLA presented J-20 to you, it is better to go for it no matter J-31 would be introduced into PLAAF or not.

Why do we always run on rumours only to end up in extreme disappointment. First it were the J-10s, than J-10B AKA FC-20, then came the chinese submarine deal (I wonder what happened to that) and now another thread already 12 pages of Pakistanis trying to convince themselves of this deal while Indians on the other hand trying their best to somehow belittle the plane just because a) Its made in China and b) Pakistan seems interested in it.

I do think so. Still I hope Sukhoi Design Bureau Will solve teething Issues of PakFA. F35 will be a reliable aircraft but will come with lots of strings attached.
