There is a large discrepancy when comparing the above figures (bold) with these souces:

According to provisional statistics 6.29 million foreign tourists arrived in India in 2011, an increase of 8,9% from 5.78 million in 2010. This ranks India as the 38th country in the world in terms of foreign tourist arrivals.

Foreign tourist arrivals to India grew by about 4.5% from 6.30 million in 2011 to 6.57 million in 2012.

May be they are counting accumulated figures for 2 to 3 years but then the total of that in 2012 does not seem right

Sadly we all know what those ignorant tourists are in for when they visit India.

Reminds me of that movie the 'Wrong Turn'.

There are only few country which can compare with history and tourist attraction of India.
It is paradise for travelers (ask anyone who has visited India) and has great potential.
No doubt we are ruining our reputation by bad deed of few people.

We are not ruining our reputation. Those few bad apples don't represent India or Indian society in general no matter how much CNN or other western media try to prove it.

Most foreign travellers who come to India have a wonderful time , though there are exceptions , that's why the numbers keep increasing with each year.

- And this news as well bodes well for India.

I read in a news source a few days ago that due to the falling value of rupee , India has become an even cheaper destination for visits by foreign tourists , hence the travel and tourism industry experts in India are expecting a big spurt in tourists arrivals this year from the month of October which is the peak time of foreign tourist arrivals in Indians. Can't find the source right now.

P.S- Here, got it - Indian tourism on a rise with fall in Rs value - Bangalore - DNA

A weak rupee means foreign tourists need to spend less for their vacation

The depreciating rupee may have hurt market sentiments, but it has definitely been a boon for the tourism and hotel industry in the country.

With the rupee hitting a new low every day against the dollar and touching 100 against the pound sterling, Indian travel, tourism and hospitality sectors are set to enter peak season from October, and are gung-ho on the prospects.

“The fall in rupee has made our inbound product far more attractive for foreign tourists with an impactful value proposition upward of 10%. We have also seen a 7-10% increase in queries for destinations like Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, Kerala,” Said Surinder Singh Sodhi, senior vice-president & head, leisure travel (Inbound), Thomas Cook (India).

For travelers abroad, India is looking an affordable destination. The cost of tour packages to India is dependent on how the Indian rupee performs in the international arena.

Since both the US as well as Europe are not doing great economically, people in these economies are looking at low-cost destinations for traveling.

“India is looking affordable from a global perspective. We are hoping that the coming months of the current fiscal, when international offices send people on business to India, should be boosted by this current situation,” Peter Kerkar, group CEO, Cox & Kings, said in a recent earnings call.

Ancillary industries such as the hotel industry also happens to benefit from the increased number of inbound travelers and are optimistic about the scenario.

“Though it is a little too early, we are expecting a 20-25% increase in bookings as compared with previous year,” says Pradhan Ganapathy, vice-president, Royal Orchid.

The hotel expects increased number of bookings from their primary markets like Russia among others, mainly because of medical tourism, which is also set to increase because of cheaper cost of treatment.

MICE tourism, which consists of travel due to meetings, incentives, conference and exhibitions, is also expected to jump . “For companies abroad, this is the right time to hold annual meetings and conferences in India,” said Ashwin Narayanan, COO, Travel Tours Group.

This number will increase as Rupee falls even more
