What's new

for those whom oppose child marriage law - shameful

I think 16 with the consent of Parents(like in in some countries of Europe/ Some states of the US) and 18 without consent should be the target. It’s the best of both worlds.
I like the idea but 16 should be moved back to 14 or 15 as our emotions starts getting developed from 14

You know it's so weird. Here in the west if someone has a girlfriend or boyfriend when they're 13, noone cares. But they have problems if you replace girlfriend or boyfriend with words like wife or husband and switch countries to one in the east.

I have no problem with child marriages.

I have a problem with consummation of such marriages without the girl reaching age of puberty.

I also have a problem with parents not taking the girl's consent and ignoring it.

A blanket law to criminalise marriages below 18 years of age are stupid and unislamic. It encourages people to zina and creates more social issues than it solves.

The biggest issue Pakistan faces culturally is that girl's consent isn't taking into consideration. There should be a law towards that. Women should be empowered and given protection.

Sadly, wishful thinking from a country where police brutally orphans kids and the head of state can't be arsed to visit or condemn the police terrorists.

Pakistan has bigger life threatening issues than child marriages.

The law is being introduced to stop that very consummation. You know our nation doesn’t stop until there is a law to prevent them. We as a nation only respond to the stick. That’s where some sense should prevail. Though i do agree, even laws in this country are frequently broken.

As the CII said, legislation is not the solution since such a law would be unislamic. An excerpt (from Dawn)

The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) on Friday insisted that a "better way" to tackle the prevalent practice of child marriages is to start an awareness campaign among the masses instead of passing legislation.

A CII spokesperson said that the council in its 212th meeting had discussed the matter in detail and had arrived at the conclusion that "legislation against child marriage and setting an age limit will lead to many complications".

The complications mentioned are first and foremost that such a law is unislamic. The CII exists solely to prevent unislamic laws. I hope we can spread that awareness, especially amongst parents. They need to take responsibility for this.

Most of these child marriages where there is such a huge age gap are where the family is oppressed or in extreme poverty or the old person is someone influential in his area. Even Islam isn't followed in these cases which clearly state that a marriage cannot happen without the girl's consent and there is no concept of forced marriage. Yet, we see and even in the OP picture, the girl is crying.

The root of the problem is complete disregard of law in this country and failure of enforcing law. People get away with murder, rape and other heinous crimes as long as they have the money to buy judges.

So on top of that, criminalising marriage before age of 18 adds to more problems rather than fixing them. The issue is somewhere else.

There should be a law where the parents and everyone involved who tries to marry a girl without her consent should be punished regardless of her age.

Sadly, in our society the will of the girl isn't given much importance which is against Islam and any modern law.

The recent law has nothing to do with this situation. This is outright injustice against the poor girl. Hang the 'bridegroom'.

While your at it, hang the father as well.

Agreed. This is exploitation at it’s worst. Influentials get away with a lot more than child marriages. But how else do you prevent influentials from forcibly marrying these underage girls, which belong to poor families. Legislation and laws are only effective when someone implements them. So these influentials escaping any punishment is all the more likely. Making the law redundant.

People in our country don’t even know the meaning of consent. In my opinion, even if the girl agrees, one has to check whether she was pressured into this decision or was it of her own volition. It’s mostly the latter. Social pressures, parental blackmail and warnings of harsh punishment is what mostly swing these underage girls into such a decision. It’s pathetic and should change.

That’s why i agree with CII stance to some extent. Awareness is part of the solution but not the whole story.

There must be repercussions for anyone found coercing and forcing young girls to marry. Islam absolutely does not allow marriages like this. It provides full rights of consent to both the man and woman, boy and girl.

I guess it boils down to implementation of laws and no one being above the law. Sadly both these factors are absent in Pakistan.

When you try to be more Arab then the Arabs.

What has this to do with Arabs?

The recent law has nothing to do with this situation. This is outright injustice against the poor girl. Hang the 'bridegroom'.

While your at it, hang the father as well.

Is it true that government's own minister of religious affairs and interior ministry rejected the bill citing more consideration?

. .
Why can't you tolerate any criticism of Arabs?
Sectarian affiliation?
or paycheck cuts?

there is no need for unwarranted flame baiting.

child marriage is a universal issue. not arab cultural export.

Those who oppose this bill in Pakistan quote Arab medieval texts to support their claim.
So, one could argue that this indeed is an Arab cultural export (under the garb of religion of course) that has no basis in the Holy Qur'an.

They can argue using colonial texts or african scriptures. Does not make it a colonial or african monopoly.

Disgusting only pedophiles will oppose such laws
Arrest the parents and the man

You are quite right.Min age 18,Dhulan 18 ke aur Dhula 60 ka:lol:
There should be a defined age gap, like 15 year max between couples.
Actually that's not correct because even in the west you get 19yr old girls marry 60 year old men. However, any huge age gap should flash up and it should be checked the girl isnt forced into the marriage. Arranged marriages are hell
