Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has sought support from Bangladeshi expatriates living in different countries alongside the government initiative to bring back the remaining five fugitive convicted killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and execute the verdict.

"Still five killers remain fugitive. One of them is in the United States while another one in Canada," he said in a reaction over the arrest of Abdul Majed, a convicted killer of Bangabandhu.

Dr Momen hoped that it will be possible to bring back the rest of the killers to execute the verdict during the "Mujib Borsho."

For this, he said, cooperation from Bangladeshi expatriates is needed apart from the government initiative.

Dr Momen said the arrest of killer Majed came as good news amid the crisis following the coronavirus outbreak.

He said the government had an expectation to bring back at least one fugitive killer during the ‘Mujib Borsho’.

Abdul Majed was arrested from Dhaka early Tuesday.

He was produced before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate AM Zulfiqar Hayat who sent him to jail.

On August 15, 1975, during the assassination of Bangabandhu, Majed, Noor and Risaldar Moslehuddin along with others were present there when he was a lieutenant.

On November 19, 2009, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty of 12 convicted former army officials for the assassination of Bangabandhu and his family members.

The fugitive killers are former Lt Col Khandaker Abdur Rashid, SHBM Noor Chowdhury, Shariful Haque Dalim, Rashed Chowdhury and Risaldar Moslehuddin.

Of them, the government knew the whereabouts of Noor Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury and Moslehuddin while it was not sure about the other three fugitives -- Rashid, Dalim and Majed.

According to government sources, Noor Chowdhury has been living in Canada and Rashed Chowdhury in the USA.

I found the lines very practical. There is no way to know what happened actually in 1975 when some misguided army officers murdered the family of banganadhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman including his 10 years old son Sheikh Russell!

Few days ago during cleaning inside AL ( casino raids and that time) Hasina said that only she, her sister and their children are her family members! She rejected the family members of the culprit Sheikh Fazlul karim selim as her own family members when she gave the list of her family members to intelligence agencies.

So maybe we also can exclude the culprit Sheikh Moni from the family of Sheikh Mujib. And if we exclude him from the family of Sheikh Mujib, maybe we can get the real picture of Hasina's brothers aka the sons of Banganadhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. I don't believe the propaganda against them. But indeed Sheikh Moni was criminal like Sheikh selim is now.

The difference between Banganadhu and her Daughter is, her daughter is not believing everyone like he did, in short Hasina is much more practical than Mujib, who was very kind and fast believed everyone and sadly martyred by the traitors. Later the traitors defamed her family members, like the lines in Bangali.

Thanks brother, but actually in Bangali system it's same thing , as in Bangla we write, "জানাজা" this letter, "জ" in bot cases.

We don't have the pronunciation of "Z" but all are "J", although we have to use both when we write. For examples the name, "Afjal or Afzal ", both spelling are correct ( personal choice vary though) We write it in Bengali as, " আফজাল" not "আফযাল".

No one in their right mind and no member of any well-disciplined army can condone the deliberate killing of a 10 year old, senior citizen civilians or any woman for that matter.

Unfortunately in an adrenaline charged confusion scenario where these army officers were operating, they were (in their collective minds)

a) not only trying to fatally end the Indian-cowtowing administration of Mujib by killing off his 'dynasty', but also,
b) avenge the supposed forcible rape of some of their good-looking wives by the younger sheikhs.

Thus certain unfortunate collateral damage was bound to happen. The death of a ten year old falls in that category. So do the killing of women in the Sheikh's household.

I am guessing you were not fully grown during the time this occurred so I am guessing information (both yours and mine) are going to be third-hand. I am going by accounts from my family elders (most were prominent well-placed civil servants at the time) and more importantly, first-hand accounts from Senior Army Staff very closely involved and 'in-the-know' about this incident and the aftermath.

The fact that the two younger Sheikh brothers were involved in goonda activities (in the absence of any possible repercussions) are very well known. This makes absolute sense and the information is well documented.

The fact that they abducted the two army wives is also well established and very well-corroborated (no one knows whether these women were actually raped but the account from their husbands were as such).

These are not propaganda. My sources (retired Army senior officers) are very credible and sane.

In any case - no one is saying that Sheikh Hasina takes after her father, she is not as naive nor as trusting. I trust Hasina's decisions in most cases, most of which makes sense to educated folks (unlike some of her ex-Goonda cabinet ministers). I am an avowed apolitical person and hopefully a good technocrat, also a member of a family involved in private sector business. I support politicians who nurture business and economic growth. In that sense Hasina has not done badly (in the last decade at least).

The things that I am not fond of is her support of these ex-cadre ministers (necessary evil) who frequently embarrass her by stating stupid things (Bangladesh is the wife of India) and the frequent cowtowing to Modi by uttering anti-Pakistan rhetoric.

But we in Bangladesh and Pakistan have to realize (without getting overly emotional) is that politics is 'one big show', and there are no permanent friends or enemies in Politics. You have to look at Hasina and see what she does, not what she says (overtures and business ties to China while keeping India at bay). I am sure IK knows this as well.

The over-arching fact remains that Sheikh Mujib (by his inaction, lack of cognizance/control or a combination of both) was at that time perpetuating dynastic politics, which these army officers were trying to end to bring back 'normalcy' in politics (in their minds this was patriotism). They had plenty of subscribers for this idea in the Army at that time and they took the steps they needed to take.

When afternoon rolled around after this morning event - Dhaka was eerily quiet. Bodies were buried hastily (Sheikh's body was buried in his ancestral village home), a new govt. was sworn in and the administration changed. There were no protests in the streets.

I don't remember the history of Sheikh Moni or what earned him his fate. His sons are in important positions now.

Tapash I believe is the mayor of Dhaka and his older brother (the professor) is president of Jubo (Youth Awami) league which is odd - western-educated academic people normally don't become heads of that organization but maybe this is part of Hasina's recent cleanup efforts to establish good leadership.
