First upgraded ATR 72 MPA to enter Navy service this year

.
I'm happy that they added hard points to this baby. Initially it was only suppose to be patrol aircraft was it not?

It was used only as a transport aircraft.

Since it is costing USD 147 million to modify each ATR-72 into MPA, the upgrades are substantial. Some of them are listed below:

  • Leonardo Seaspray 7300E X-band airborne surveillance radar
  • Aerodata AG mission system AeroMission
  • Star Safire III EO/IR system
  • Elettronica [U/I] ESM systems
  • Self protection equipment
  • ELINT equipment
  • Stores pylons, depth charges and torpedoes
  • High speed real time data links

Where'd you get that figure?

To be honest, $147 m per aircraft is a lot, even with all that sophisticated gear and the structural modifications for ASW. I would be surprised if the program doesn't include the cost of torpedoes at least.

Since they have added hardpoints, hopefully the cost includes anti-ship missiles and/or torpedoes.

AM-39 Exocet no longer excites me. I would like something like Saab RBS 15 (range:200+ km).

That'd be nice ... Saab RBS-15Mk3 with Saab Tp 47 LWT.

No need. Saab Tp 47 will be a 400 mm, wire guided torpedo.

Stick with the Mk 46, add twin round pylons for 2x2 Mk 46 torpedoes. So, 2x long range anti-ship missiles could be carried on the remaining hardpoints.

without MAD how do they expect these ATR's to use torpedo against sub targets?

So far, not installed. However, MAD system will eventually find it's way along with sonobuoy's.

How do you think P-8 Poseidon uses torpedoes without MAD?
It uses Sonobuoys , but that is for p8 as it cannot do low level detection. And hence uses specialized Sonobuoys.

Fir smaller aircraft like atr72, it need mad and limited Sonobuoys capability due to space

I am not sure what PN plan to do but it seems it is again going for a lemon. I hope not...

The planes and modifications look fantastic , small upgrade but nice too see some small improvements here and there

Considering our JF17 thunder program was 500 Million , the mere upgrade of 1-2 crafts for 147 million is a astronomical figure
