A man in Chiniot was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition and has been kept under isolation, with doctors fearing he may have contracted the deadly Ebola virus.

Zulfiqar Ahmad, 40, who resides in Chiniot, returned to Pakistan on November 16 after working for the Togolese Republic in West Africa.

Ahmad faced multiple health-related problems and was admitted to the DHQ Hospital in Chiniot and later shifted to the Allied Hospital by his relatives.

After conducting initial diagnostic tests, doctors said that he may have contracted the Ebola virus.

“He is a chronic patient of various diseases, and was previously admitted in a hospital in Togo for more than 20 days,” Medical Superintendent (MS) Allied Hospital Dr Rashid Maqbool told The Express Tribune.

He also stated that Ahmad has a serious liver issue and has been vomiting blood.

“He is in a critical condition and is being provided with maximum facilities available at the hospital. His blood and other samples have been taken which have been sent to the National Health Laboratory in Islamabad to ascertain the possibility of the Ebola virus attack,” Dr Maqbool said.

Further, the doctor said that a special team has been constituted to provide Ahmad exclusive treatment. He added that on the arrival of the analysis report, the possibility of the virus could be ruled out and decided accordingly

What if it is Ebola, and to how many peoples he transmitted, his family, friends and medical staff.. who knows.. i hope its not but if it is, God knows what will happen in Pakistan, we are still stuck in dengue and polio, Ebola will be totally destructive in Pakistan.

Lets pray that its not Ebola...

I am not sure if our airports are scanning incoming passengers and putting the suspected ones in quarantine. There are thousands of Pakistanis working in West Africa.

On the bright side, a country like Nigeria managed to control Ebola, so there is hope for Pakistan where medical infrastructure is much better. Only if our government wakes up in time.

It doesn't sound like ebola because otherwise he would've been dead by now. If he really has contracted ebola, everyone who came in contact with him need to be isolated for 3 weeks.

Ebola has an incubation period of about 3 weeks. Plus it can stay in system for long time. So there is a chance that this man is carrying the virus.

We need to have compulsory quarantine for all travelers from West Africa.

Its better to improve the scanning process and quarantine only those showing the symptoms. It will be impossible to quarantine everyone because a) to my knowledge there is no direct flight from anywhere in Western Africa to Pakistan. People transit through Dubai, Turkey etc. b) I can imagine customs/FIA getting thousands per passenger to let them go without any checks :)

This is probably not Ebola but Pakistan needs to take severe measures to keep away from Ebola. Ebola in the Indian subcontinent could mean the end of civilization...

If people transit...dont these transit airports have any form of screening?
