The first span of the Padma bridge is going to be placed on pillars on Saturday.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader will witness the work at Zajira end of the bridge in Shariatpur in the morning, said the project's Executive Engineer (Resettlement) Tofazzel Hossain.

The 150 metres long superstructure weighing around 32 tonnes will be put on the pillars no. 37 and 38, reports bdnews24.com.

The shuttering of the pillars were removed. "We are putting the finishing touches. The span will be placed at 11am," Tofazzel said on Friday.

The 6.15 kilometres bridge will have 42 pillars, including two on the river banks.

Officials and engineers said four more spans would be placed in October.

"We are very much proud to be involved with this project. The engineers are also delighted as their ceaseless work is going to be visible," said Project Director Shafiqul Islam.

A floating crane has already carried the span to Zajira from Mawa, engineers said. Now the 'bearing work' was under way, which would help the span tolerate vibration and maintain balance, they said.

The span will be placed when the pillars achieve the ability to bear 50 megapascal pressure.

The construction of the bridge's main infrastructure started in 2015.

Until now, around 47 per cent of the around Tk 288 billion project has been completed.

The government expects to finish the project by December next year.

A little clarification of the bridge: There will be 2 abutments, one at each bank, plus 40 pillars in between the 2 abutments. The total is (2+40)= 42. So, there will be 41 spans.

I heard the US burgers are quite large, and the African Americans eat three beef burgers at a time. How many our pot-bellied guys eat?

Well like everything else you can get super large burgers in LA. This one is my personal favorite down at a place called 'Love and Salt' in Manhattan Beach (about $22 with Salad). Those are two 1/4 pounder patties. Very reasonably priced....

It's not just African Americans who are large people (250 plus pounds) - so they have appetites to match. Three small burgers sounds about right at one seating.

Most Bangladeshi people would have a hard time finishing more than one of this size.

In LA most people won't even touch burgers.

Large portion of educated populace are Vegans.

Guys please let us go back on topic.

Sorry - my bad. Back to topic. :-)

Latest... by the way, the crane that transported the fabricated span is the largest floating crane in the world....
