FIRST PHOTOS: Indo-French Exercise Shakti

By the way PN sir,the British soldier in your link was wearing a Mk 6A combat helmet which is made out of Ballistic Nylon and ceramics........not Kevlar.

I looked at the picture in your link. My analysis is as under.

Most of the ammunition fired by militants/terrorists/rebels in the middle east is Russian 7.62 mm calibre. This bullet makes a very small entry point and a comparatively larger exit hole. The 7.62 is a high powered round which penetrates through sheer kinetic energy. The NATO 5.56 makes an even smaller entry hole. The Indian INSAS uses the same caliber. Just look at the entry hole on the helmet (I have marked the entry and exit points in red ovals). The entry hole is HUGE and it is also angular. This suggests a ricochet. The bullet struck some hard object which changed its shape and then struck the helmet obliquely. The penetration in the helmet was very shallow given the very oblique angle of attack and the fact that most of the kinetic energy had been expended when the bullet struck the hard object before striking the helmet. It basically grazed the helmet.
This notwithstanding, the soldier is very lucky to be alive as without the helmet he was a dead man. But the point is that no helmet has yet been made which can stop a direct hit from a 7.62/5.56 mm round. All helmets are designed to protect against splinters and ricochets. The reason for this is that a helmet that stops a bullet from an assault rifle within range will simply be too heavy to wear. Ask anyone who has worn a BPP (bullet proof patka), They do stop bullets from the sides but they are so heavy that the brain stops working after a while plus there is no protection from top.

Feel free to comment.

GREAT observation buddy. And yeah, the bulletproof Patka is about 1.8 kg and not very comfortable to wear. But they effectively stops point blank direct hits of 7.62*39mm rounds and 7.62*51mm NATO rounds from 40 meter which is beyond the league of any other combat helmet.Besides, the newer version provides top cover from 9mm rounds from 10 meter. You may check the links I provided.
