First Sukhoi-30 overhauled at Nashik, highlights HAL’s growing capability

The first overhauled Sukhoi-30 aircraft will be handed over to the Indian Air Force by the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Nashik division, on Friday. This will be the first time ever that a used Sukhoi will be returned to the field.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar, chief of air staff Arup Raha and HAL chairman R K Tyagi will be present on the occasion. The handing over ceremony will take place at HAL Nashik division at Ozar at 10.30 am on Friday and the actual handover will be done between 11.45 am to 12.30 pm.

Managing director (MiG Complex) S Subrahmanyan of HAL Nashik division told TOI, “We are the first in the world to hand over an overhauled Su-30 to the Air Force after its full completion of 10 years and 1,500 hours of flight. Even Russia has not done it.”

Subrahmanyan said repair and overhaul is done for aircraft completing 10 years or 1,500 flying hours and the Sukhoi had completed both. A complete aircraft check has to be done after this period. All aircrafts come back to the aircraft division after they have completed this period. “We got more than 750 aggregates. Now, the aircraft will fly for another 10 years or 1,500 hours before it returns for an overhaul,” he said.

The division is well laid out on a sprawling complex of 1.48 crore sq m with a built-up area of 1.73 lakh sq m and is equipped with state-of-the-art plant, machinery, equipment and infrastructure. The work of upgrading MiG-29s is under way at Nashik, along with repair and overhaul of MiG-21 aircraft variants, MiG-27 aircraft and their aggregates and rotables.

The overhaul includes evaluation of the aircraft, technical state and their maintainability, evaluation of technical and maintainability of aggregates and systems, check up of package contents, aircraft acceptance by flight and test complex.

It includes aircraft visual inspection, engine start, fuel and oil discharge from fuel and oil systems; weighting, levelling and preservation of the aircraft, check up of aggregate and the logbooks of the airframe, engines and auxiliary power unit, disassembly of the aircraft, washing and flaw detection of the aggregates and components, flaw detection and overhaul of aggregates and components, flaw detection and repair of the airframe.

The Nashik plant has manufactured 150 Sukhois from 2008, which is one of the best aircrafts in the world. The MD had informed that the Nashik division was in the raw material phase and produces 73 raw material parts here. “Earlier, every item used to go abroad for repair. Now, every item can be repaired and overhauled here,” he had said in an interview with TOI.

.
lets hope that GTRE will be able to develop a decent power plant for the home grown fighter.know how is is already there but still they screw things up when it comes to developing a jet engine.

Who cares, as long as they do their jobs in timely manner.
treat them with respect make them feel part of a team... it really helps psychologically

HAL eyes global overhaul prospects worth Rs 22,000 crore

By Ajai Shukla
Business Standard, 10th Jan 15

On Friday, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) delivered to the Indian Air Force (IAF) the first Sukhoi-30MKI fighter ever overhauled. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar travelled to HAL’s new overhaul facility in Nashik --- the first of its kind worldwide --- to hand over the overhauled fighter to IAF boss, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha.

With the IAF down to just 34 fighter squadrons against its authorized strength of 45 squadrons, and with negotiations over the Rafale yielding no breakthrough so far, it is critical for the IAF to keep its Su-30MKIs flying.

After flying 1,500 hours or 14 years (whichever is first), a Su-30MKI must be pulled out of the flight line for a comprehensive overhaul.

This involves dismantling and stripping the fighter down to its skeleton, checking every component, repairing or replacing them as required, carrying out more than 600 modifications, and finally rebuilding these into a current standard Su-30MKI. This involves 2478 separate processes, which are monitored on line.

An overhaul equips the fighter to fly for another 1,500 hours/14 years. During its service lifetime of 6,000 hours/25 years, a Su-30MKI would undergo three overhauls. That means the overhaul facility would have to do 816 overhauls just for the IAF’s planned fleet of 272 Su-30MKIs.

“The Su-30 overhaul facility at HAL Nashik is (the) only (one) of its kind in the world and has export prospects since nearly 10 countries have Su-30 fleet (sic),” said the defence ministry (MoD) on Tuesday.

Potential overseas customers, who together fly over 200 Su-30 fighters, include Russia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Algeria, Venezuela, Angola and Uganda. China too operates the Su-30MKK, a variant of the Indian version, but would be unlikely to get them overhauled in India.

HAL’s overhaul facility chief, S Subrahmanyan, told Business Standard in October 2014 that overhauling the Su-30MKI in India cost roughly one-third the price of a brand new fighter. HAL is currently supplying the fighter to the IAF at Rs 358 crore; HAL sources say overhauling a Su-30MKI costs Rs 110 crore.

The market potential for overhauling 200 Su-30s in service overseas is, therefore, worth about Rs 22,000 crore.

HAL is quickly ramping up overhaul capacity to 15 fighters per year. “We have already approached the MoD to step up capacity to 30 fighters per year, which will cater for our requirements into the 2030s”, said Subrahmanyan.

Depending upon overhaul orders from foreign operators, this capacity would be further enhanced.

RK Tyagi, Chairman HAL, said on Friday that the second overhauled Su-30MKI is ready for delivery. “HAL will also act as a single window OEM for supporting Su-30MKI fleet”, he said.

When India first procured the Su-30MKI from Russia, the overhaul schedule was 1,500 hours/10 years. But, when the earliest fighters, which had joined the fleet in 2000, became due for overhaul in 2010, the IAF found they had flown far less than 1,500 hours. The Russian vendor, Sukhoi, revised the time stipulation to 14 years.

Setting up the overhaul facility at Nashik, and overhauling the first Su-30MKI has taken 14 years. This is because the initial contract, signed in 2000 for building 140 fighters in India, did not cater for establishing an overhaul facility --- a mistake, say contract lawyers.

Ok, now we have 210 more to go

Did anyone say as to how much time did they take to over haul this jet,
Hal manufactures 14 Su30MKI a year, if it takes a similar a similar time to overhaul the jet, then we are looking at 15 yrs for MLU of all 260+ Su30MKI

That is not the point, it is about looking the part it sets the right image. No wonder things do not get done on time as we neglect the basics!

Capacity is for 15 fighters per year and Hal reached MOD to step up capacity to 30 fighters per year. Numbers can go up depending on orders from foreign operators of SU-30.

I just would like them to have a HAL jacket/overall which would be issued as standard. I just like the idea of staff coming to work in the right attire and in my view this helps with the mindset but I am old fashioned in this regard.
