First batch of rapid COVID-19 tests arrives in Turkey from China
BY DAILY SABAH

MAR 23, 2020 8:46 AM GMT+3
Turkey received the first batch of rapid novel coronavirus tests that can identify the COVID-19 disease in 15 minutes.

The plane carrying the test kits arrived from China at Istanbul's Atatürk Airport early Monday. The equipment was brought by Turkish Cargo, a subsidiary of Turkey's flag-carrier Turkish Airlines (THY).

Officials who picked up the cargo then transported it to Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Research and Training Hospital.

The Health Ministry said the tests will be distributed to all 81 Turkish provinces.

The rest of the 2 million kits ordered by Turkey will arrive in the country in the upcoming weeks.

Heeding the World Health Organization's call for widespread testing, Turkey has conducted more than 20,000 tests for COVID-19 as of Sunday, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.

Turkey on Sunday confirmed nine more deaths from COVID-19, bringing its total number of fatalities to 30. Meanwhile, the number of cases rose to 1,256.

Speaking in the Parliament on Thursday, Koca said Turkey hopes to raise the number of daily tests to between 10,000 and 15,000.

The highly contagious COVID-19, which originated in central China in late 2019, has infected nearly 340,000 people worldwide, killing more than 14,000. Some 99,000 have recovered so far.

Turkey using drug from China for coronavirus
  • News Desk

Ankara, Turkey / Tue, March 24, 2020 / 03:02 pm

Turkey's health minister said Monday that the country is using a drug sent from China on patients suffering from the novel coronavirus.

"From this morning we have brought a special drug used in China which is claimed to have resulted in improvements in intensive care patients, cutting their time in care from 11-12 days to four days," Fahrettin Koca told reporters.

He did not give more information on the drug but the anti-malarial drug chloroquine has recently been used to treat coronavirus patients in China as well as France.

Some researchers have said chloroquine shows great promise, though scientists have agreed that more trials are needed to determine if the drug is really effective and safe.

According to figures released late Monday, Turkey has officially recorded 1,529 coronavirus cases and 37 deaths.

Koca said 50,000 rapid detection kits had arrived from China on Monday and had begun to be used, with 300,000 expected by Thursday.

The minister added that the Chinese government agreed with Turkey to share information on the novel coronavirus as the two countries step up cooperation to fight against the pandemic.

While Koca did not detail where the positive cases were in Turkey, he said the virus had spread across the country.

He did say there were fewer than 10 cases in Turkey's Van province, which borders badly-hit Iran.

He also said some health workers had caught the coronavirus, without giving figures.

A further 32,000 health workers will be employed during the crisis, he told a press conference in Ankara.

Koca also said that face masks produced in Turkey "will not be exported" as the country was in need.

There had been speculation that Koca might announce a state of emergency, but he urged Turks to "announce their own state of emergency" as he insisted citizens adhere to measures already announced by Ankara.

Turkish authorities have ordered those aged 65 and above and those with chronic illnesses to stay at home, while most public spaces have been temporarily closed.

ANKARA

Novel coronavirus drugs from China were delivered to 40 cities across Turkey via air ambulance to be used for patients in intensive care units, the Turkish health minister announced Tuesday.

"The drugs, which reached the [capital] Ankara late at night, were distributed to 40 cities via air ambulances. The new drugs will be used by COVID-19 patients being treated in intensive care units," Fahrettin Koca said in a written statement.

He noted out that the Turkish Health Ministry's Vaccine Institute would support scientists to develop a vaccine against the virus.

"Turkey will support every promising scientific effort. The Turkish Trade Ministry is ready to pool [for coronavirus vaccine researches]," he added.

After emerging in Wuhan, China last December, the virus has spread to at least 169 countries and regions around the globe, with over 395,600 cases and 17,241 deaths.

To date, over 103,300 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered from the disease.

So far, 37 people have died of the virus in Turkey, with 1,529 cases confirmed.

I heard this tests might mistaken if you are negative.
I mean if you are possitive, it will show you possitive. But if you are negative it might Show you as Possitive or negative. This test aren't perfect but we also use our own test kits for the confirmation of the positive results... we test the possitive results again... our own test kits takes more time but the results are certain...
Thats why nations shouldn't rely on this chinese kits they also need a backup plan. Other than that this 15 minute kits speeding things up for some negatives, so it is fine.
