NEW DELHI: The Navy's ongoing endeavour to create ``hi-tech sea warriors'' will take the first step on Saturday when the first batch of such newly-commissioned officers pass out of the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala in Kerala, with defence minister A K Antony taking the salute.

The Navy has decided all its new officers will have a B.Tech degree, or an MSc (applied electronics) degree at the very least, because of the unprecedented expansion in warship and weapon technology, as was first reported by TOI earlier.

``We need tech-savvy officers because of the advanced warships, with their state-of-the-art weapon systems, we are progressively inducting. At present, 75% of the 1,050 naval cadets undergoing training are following the B.Tech programme,'' said Navy's assistant chief of personnel (HRD) Rear Admiral S N Ghormade on Friday.

With over 130 warships, including 15 submarines, 80 aircraft, 120 helicopters and 14 spy drones, the Navy is gradually emerging as a powerful three-dimensional ``blue-water'' force to protect India's geo-strategic interests stretching from Hormuz Strait to Malacca Strait.

Though many old warships and aircraft are slated for retirement, the force has chalked out plans worth over Rs 3 lakh crore for the next 15 years to become a force with over 150 warships and close to 600 fighters, maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters and drones. Already 42 ships and six submarines are being constructed at different shipyards.

This infusion of advanced systems will require all officers to have cutting-edge technical knowledge. Moreover, from the current strength of 8,700 officers, 50,000 sailors and 43,000 civilians, the Navy will also gradually increase the numbers to 13,700 officers, 85,000 sailors and 75,000 civilians by 2027.

Consequently, from its existing annual capacity of 750 trainees, INA will begin training 1,250 cadets from 2018 onwards after a major expansion already approved by the government. ``In addition to the B.Tech programme, the cadets will of course continue to get the traditional military and leadership training,'' said Rear Admiral Ghormade.

At the INA parade on Saturday, 310 new officers will be commissioned. While 62 of the direct-entry officers will be armed with B.Tech, 44 of those who came to INA for the 7th and 8th semesters from the National Defence Academy will have MSc degrees. Another 47 of them will be B.Tech-entry short-service commission (SSC) officers, while the rest will be SSC and Coast Guard officers.
