The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has started work to set up an office for consultants of a project to send the country's first satellite, Bangabandhu-1, into the orbit.

BTRC chief Zia Ahmed told bdnews24.com that the work to set up the office on the fourth floor of the BTRC building started on Tuesday.

Commission deputy director Mohammad Golam Razzak has been appointed as the project director for setting up the office.

The BTRC chief said selection of a consulting company has already been completed and a deal would be struck with US-based Space Partnership International (SPI) within the current month.

Mentioning that the initiative has been taken as part of implementing the idea of building 'Digital Bangladesh', Zia said: "BTRC started the project to realise the dream of sending a satellite into the orbit."

Razzak told bdnews24.com that currently, the country's satellite TV channels, internet service providers, V-Sat and radio stations are providing their services by renting foreign satellites.

"Each TV channel is paying $0.2 million per year by way of rent. Altogether, 19 TV channels and other firms are paying around $4 million per year," he said.

The BTRC chief mentioned that once the country's own satellite starts working, not only the rent money would be saved but also the country would earn foreign currency.

"At least Tk 30-40 billion will be spent to send the satellite into the orbit. But the money will return in five years."

He also said US-based firm SPI would charge around Tk 870 million for consultancy.

Zia termed the project a long-term one, but could not say its exact execution time.

Project director Razzak said: "Bangladesh has already secured its space in the orbit at 102 degree east for the satellite."

He said a 25-member foreign consulting team and a six-member team of Bangladesh would be working at the project office for consultants. "The consulting firm will work on market survey, marketing, training of specialists, ground station maintenance, etc."

(well people say the sky is the limit, well it looks like we are gonna break it soon:) )

hmmmm...and why am I not surprised , since the US connection ;)

Anyways all the best , I just hope they don't name it BangaBandhu.

Bangladesh - 1 or Bangal - 1
sounds much better.

Chinese or Indian assistance would have been cheaper. Why does it have to be the US? I smell some terrible corruption.

And just what makes you think that dealing with India or China would be corruption-free?

Of-course, the Americans have good technology coupled with excellent support over such matters.

You get into corruption with the Americans over important and expensive matters like aerospace or defense, they won't deal with you.

No politics there buddy

Dude, there's always a greater scope of corruption when buying relatively more expensive equipments. A satellite that works is good enough for us. We don't need the best satellite in the world.

And Americans aren't all that clean, as you tend to believe. There are lobbies that financially benefit from different deals.

Most probably it would be named BanglaSAT as it is the convention to use name in this way that. India's first satellite was named after Great Mathematician Aryabhatta.

Dude i don't see the point in investing smaller amount for an Indian or Chinese satellite, every big business is based on a feasibility that ranges from 3-7 years, this satellite projects it's feasibility within that time frame. For such a massive investment, this projection is really good. So, I don't see the problem going for good reliable American technology, I guess you aren't involved in any kind of business, bro.

Yes, you guys can go for american technology for satellite development and reach out to India or China for launching the satellite.

If China or India can launch satellites with long-term feasibility, why can they not help us?

Again, my point is that there's just more hype associated with getting American stuff among ordinary people, and politicians take advantage of this to meet their annual corruption goals!

What?

I never said American politics isn't corrupt

India's and China's space programs are limited for their own use. And do not even come close to US technology and experience.

Name one major American business deal involving defense and aerospace equipment or program that was riddled with corruption? You won't find too any. They do so in respect to the business.

The Saudis do smooth business. $30 billion got them 80+ F-15s along with other goodies and training. The Russians do smooth business during the numerous space programs with the Americans. Where is the corruption?

What's wrong with lobbies? They have every right to lobby for their interests. That is not corruption and it's the beauty of Capitalism.

I find this deal surprising considering that relations between the AL and the US aren't that great.

.....................What? american technology already shows feasibility in 5 years for superior technology....why the hell would i want an unreliable commy or indian technology?

In Bangladesh before naming anything small or big you have to start with B.bandhu .

OK I give up. Zabanya and aazidane wins.:yahoo:
But I hate seeing large amounts of money going from the developing world to the developed world, unless the purchase involves ToT.
