Now that is a beauty

.
We ordered only 66 Hawks because it will be replaced/augemented by our own advanced supersonic trainer CAT , which is under developement though priority of developement is less.

It was first revealed in Aero India 2005. There was once speculation the LCA trainer (downgraded version) can serve as CAT but it would be very costly.

The CAT can perform combat missions as well incase needed, CAT stands for Combat Aircraft Trainer.

CAT as of as per 2005 model looks like HJT-36-BAe Hawk mixture combo.

This is mockup cockpit of CAT (combat Attack Trainer) from Aero India 2005, which is under developement, What is surprising is there have been no news till now on the status of it,

Mr Baweja said that HAL had a huge orderbook of over 100 aircraft, with the value aggregating over Rs 25,000 crore. Besides the Sukhois, whose delivery to IAF had been advanced by about four years, HAL was upgrading Jaguar, making it an all new and more powerful fighter aircraft, MiG 21 and MiG 27s, he added.

With its hands full, HAL had for the time being given up the proposal to develop a Combat Air Trainer (CAT) as a replacement for the 66 British made Hawk Advanced Jet trainers to be acquired by IAF in two phases between 2007-12. HAL had already submitted a project report on CAT to the two-seat jet trainer with heavy weaponisation and tandem cockpit configuration.

So it'll come but right now not among the priorities, Engineering design has been done which is good news.
