FACING THE threat of commissioning its latest submarines without torpedoes after Italian firm Finmeccanica was blacklisted, the Defence Ministry is now looking towards Germany for supplying torpedoes for the six under-construction submarines.

Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar is on a three-day visit to Germany where he will explore the option of getting German Seahake torpedoes for the submarines.

While the official purpose of Mohan Kumar’s visit is to attend the decade-old annual India-German Higher Defence Committee Meeting, he will also visit German defence firm ThyssenKrup’s manufacturing unit in Kiel.


Seahake torpedoes are made by Atlas Electronik, a joint venture between ThyssenKrup and EADS. Atlas Electronik had participated in the Defence Expo in Goa in March this year

Last month, the Defence Ministry had withdrawn the tender for purchasing 98 Black Shark torpedoes for Scorpene submarines, which Whitehead Alenia SistemiSubacquei (WASS), a subsidiary of the VVIP helicopter scam-tainted Italian defence conglomerate Finmeccanica had won during the UPA regime. If no other alternative is selected, the Navy will induct the first of these Project 75 submarines, INS Kalavari, into service later this year without its main anti-ship attack system.

Under Project 75, six conventional submarines are being built at the Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL) in Mumbai with technology from French firm DCNS. The total cost of Project 75 is estimated at more than Rs 25,000 crore.

Notwithstanding the pressing need, sources said there are a few shortcomings in the German torpedo. Seahake had participated in field trials, along with WASS Black Shark torpedoes, and was not found fit for selection. Selecting it now would set a wrong precedent, and could lead to legal challenges, sources said.

Moreover, MDL has already customised the six Scorpene-class submarines to integrate its fire control system with the Black Sharks. Integrating Sehakes with the submarines will not only cost extra but also take more time, according to sources.

During his visit, the Defence Secretary will also discuss the German proposal to build six submarines in India under Project 75(I). The Defence Ministry has been looking for a foreign partner to commence production of six more submarines

Both are good choices but there are perception made by certain 'analysts' cum Italian lobbyists that we have no choice other than Black shark which is plain misinformation.
PS: SeaHakes are similar in configuration and in service with navies using SUBTICS management system( same as Scorpenes).

Do you even read the rules of previous Defence procurement process? It says clearly about COMPLETE BAN, if he allows that tomorrow Lockheed Martin or Boeing will do it. Its good to send a strong message unless ofcourse you are driven by a particular ideology of hate towards BJP.
