Finland’s foreign minister has warned Israel that European sanctions against the Jewish state are now on the cards as the EU imposes similar measures on Russia.

Speaking in Helsinki, Erkki Tuomioja, asked: “How come the Palestinian territories have been occupied for 47 years and there are no sanctions?”


Crimea was annexed by Russia earlier this year

In reference to both Russia’s annexation of Crimea (pictured) and Israel’s actions in the West Bank, he said: “If a country invades and occupies and annexes part of another country this is clearly illegal and being followed by sanctions.”

On Israel, he said there was “a link with the Ukraine Crimea crisis” and that countries would discuss the option of sanctions against Israel.

He added that the policy of offering Israel mainly “carrots” in an effort to bring about peace with the Palestinians had not worked, and that Brussels may now have to use “sticks” too.

At the height of the Gaza conflict, the European Union Foreign Affairs Council issued a statement reaffirming Israel’s right to defend itself and calling on terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip to disarm.

Russia has been widely condemned for its intervention in Ukraine, with the annexation of Crimea the first such action in Europe since World War Two, but Israel was among a minority of nations who refused to criticise Russia for it.

Its a point that should be discussed but in the end nothing will be done. After what the world has seen the palestinian terrorists do to their own brothers nobody really cares anymore. People are getting fed up with political correctness which has allowed Rotherham paedophile gangs to roam free for more than 10 years and rape 1400 underaged girls( some as young as 9 years old ) , Britain becoming largest western recruiting ground for ISIS, Lee rigby beheading in London. Any more appeasement of radical Islam would backfire spectacularly in both Britain and France, and parties in power know that since victory on BNP in EU election has indicated shift in mood among general public.

It converted a nationalist Palestine movement into a Islamic terrorist movement by providing tacit support to Hamas during it's incipient phase. In case of Russia, Russia is being seen as a country which is invading Ukraine proper ( no one gives a damn for Crimea ), and not sanctioning Russia would set up bad precedence. So Russia is being sanctioned even though no one in Europe wants to do that.


In case of Israel, Israel could always argue that they are acting in self defence against rocket lobbing hamas, and with prevailing mood being anti-Islamic in west ( reasons already posted ), it is impossible to pass a bill for sanctioning Israel. Today, Sanctioning Israel would be seen as appeasement of radical Islam, and conservatives would bleed votes to right wing BNP. Thia ensures that no sanction would be put on Israel.

The west has never placed sanctions on Israel not in the decades gone past when terrorism was nothing compared to the organised groups today

it won't do so in the near future

israel in fact is a tiny state with a growing arab/ muslim population that might be as high as 30-35 percent in the coming few decades

Average Joe is territorial and does not give a damn about rights of people living far away. Average Joe always thinks in us vs them terms.

Your country is being sanctioned because of US pressure and a fear among Europeans that their turn would come; Not because they feel for Ukrainians.

He needs to brush up on his history and international law. Under international law the West Bank is Palestine Mandate territory where Jews may settle on state land as they wish or by purchase from Arabs. Thus the only illegal occupation the area suffered was its seizure by the Jordanians from 1947-1967.
