What's new

Finally, The Economist speaks!

Nope they found lots of similarity between Islam and Buddhism which made Islam attractive along with getting close to power dynamics of Islamic rule. Who will miss that??

I can understand If Buddhist were persecuted by Hindu king to welcome a Muslim rule .

But why they change their own religion of centuries altogether and convert to an alien religion instead of sticking with Buddhist religion and flourish especially when supposed Hindu persecution was gone ??

It just happened everywhere Buddhists and also Hindus who came under Islamic rule e,g Afghanistan, Sindh, Punjab and Bengal and remained so for the longest period of time. Now they are part of Islamic states with non existent Buddhists religionist with minuscule Hindu population.

.
Heavens!

To what extent can one cavort with fantasy!

Islam and Buddhism is similar!

If similar why change?

A real coc.kananny logic!

I give up.

I recuse myself so as to not lose my sanity!

Too Alice in Wonderland stuff for me!

Some one tell that to the militants in Thailand

the siliguri corridor is 21 to 40 km in width that is more then enough for building a highway with good standard & railway tracks can be done easily that would solve the transit problem once & for all on each sides of the road just built an forward military bases & forward flying base i thinks its quite possible

Even after Sena dynasty it took centuries to get rid of social stigma. Islam was attractive, powerfull, and gave them a way to get back to their (buddhist) original social status (ruling class).

That was how it worked.

Wonderfull idea. At least will save us all the headache.

I think annexing CHT will be easier, cheaper and quicker solution.

see we cannot rule out the bnp/jamat guys coming to power they count their votes on india centric mantra its better if we built a highway in the corridor this will take away a large part of their mantra think about its a winning strategy which will cut the headache once & for all

Absolutely agree with you, I have been advocating the same, ever since this transit deal came into news. I reckon this transit through Bangladesh is a temp thing. Government is already working on few rail links in the north east, highways will follow hopefully.

Yeah, best of luck on that

 I was just joking. But if Bangladeshis on PDF can annex all of north east, Indians can annex CHT too.

You really think this will be temporary? I hope so. Wouldn't want the transit to NE be subject to blackmail.

I hope so, kinda wish BNP/Jamaat return to power in Bangladesh in the next to next elections, so that the transit deal gets axed. We need few more years to increase the trade volume to and from N.E India.(one more term of AL will give us till 2018, and will allow us to use Bangladesh route.) After which Government of India, and state governments in the region should have enough money/reasons to build a transport corridor(rail and highways) thought the Silliguri corridor.

Hopefully, BNP return to power and the transit deal goes down the drain. Would give GoI a lot more reason to pursue a transport through the Silliguri corridor. Remember, our babus don't do anything unless they have no other choice. If AL returns to power, they'll sit around and do nothing for another 20 years.

Bangladesh annexing North East India? Kind of a joke if you ask me

The transit has both pros and cons for Bangladesh.

Totally false. Buddhists were never 'pushed' by Hindu expansion. It is just that mainstream Hinduism was always more in majority compared to us. But even then we always co-existed peacefully. This myth spread mostly by Hindu-haters that they "exterminated" Buddhism is an utter lie.

Buddhism started seeing its downfall only after it was institutionalized by a few high priests who completely twisted the meanings of the teachings (in all schools of thought within Buddhism). If you doubt this, then take a look at southeast where Buddhist priests still learn mainstream Hindu mantras and sutras, as far as the royal high priests of Thai and Khmer kings.

Buddhism was exterminated by barbaric invading Islamic forces from Central Asia and southwest Asia, starting with what is today Afghanistan and Pakistan. Since our philosophy didn't allow combat on such a mass scale even in retaliatory terms, some Buddhists reverted to mainstream Hinduism to fight back.

But throughout years, it was exterminated off the land.

Seriously, Hindu expansion? We Buddhists have been the safest under mainstream Hindu majority's protection for millennia.. And why were we ever unsafe with them? Buddhism emerged as a philosophy of peace and self-satisfaction from mainstream Hinduism, mate. Gautama Siddharatha was a mainstream Hindu and Hindus also worship Him as the 9th incarnation of Vishnu.

When organized religions become majority, we've seen what happens in not just Afghanistan and Pakistan, but also Bangladesh and even in Philippines. So save your breath.

@ My dear beloved Bhuddist friend your idea is not at all correct. Bhuddist-Hindus co-existance impossible in those days!!!!! If it is so why the Bhuddist flade to Sri Lanka, Far East, China and Japan ??????

@ Truth was that in those days no convertee was allowed in Hinduism. Once the Sen Dynesty came to power in Bengal, the Hindus started mass killing of Bhuddiist and destroying their pegoda and behars. The Bhuddist used to belief on,"Ohinsha muha pap, jib hatta moha pap", instead of fighting with the Deccan Hindus(Sen Dynesty) they(religious teachers) opted for migration. Some flade to Sri Lanka, some to China through Aurunachal, some towards Far East and fartherist to Japan.

@ The common Bhuddist remained in Bengal but were not allowed to preserve their religion neither they could embrass Hinduism. Under these circumstances there were many "Peer, Fakirs and Ullema Mashek" at Arrakan(Burma) used to come from Central Asia and Middle East for preaching Islam. The Bengalee Bhuddist used to visit Arrakan for "Tezarat" and by seeing these alien people were convinced and invited them to visit Bengal. Soon these common Bhuddist people embrassed Islam. Most of the Bengalee Bhuddist became Muslim much before the Muslim rule was established in Bengal.

No one fled anywhere. Buddhist missionaries went to these countries. Like Muslim sufi saints came to Indian sub continent. You wouldn't say Muslims fled from Arabia to Pakistan. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, would you?
