Final Certification For Indian LCA Underway | AVIATION WEEK

BENGALURU, India — The final certification process for Tejas, India’s Light Combat Aircraft, has begun ahead of its crucial initial operational clearance (IOC), program official P.S. Subramanyam tells AVIATION WEEK.

The certification process is being conducted by a team headed by K. Tamilmani, chief executive at the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (Cemilac). It is one of the most significant developments in the last nine-and-a-half years of the program. The first prototype of the Tejas initial technology demonstrator made its first flight on Jan. 4, 2001.

“The certification mainly ensures that the user [the Indian Air Force] will be handed over a safe, mature and reliable aircraft with specified performance,” says Subramanyam, who is program director for combat aircraft and director of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). “Cemilac has given a clear road map segmenting two major steps—equipment and system certifications. The process was started a month ago.”

More than 300 engineers from ADA, Cemilac, the Defense Research and Development Organization, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., the National Aerospace Laboratories and other program partners are working in tandem to ensure that Tejas enters the much-awaited IOC by December 2010.

“There’s excitement in the air,” Subramanyam says. “We are ensuring that everything goes as per the script—be it the tests on the ground, on the aircraft and while [in the] air. The Tejas certification mission is in full throttle.”

For its part, Cemilac has been updated with all the test schedules. “All operational equipment needs to be certified,” Tamilmani says. “We look at the reliability of all systems . . . especially in the flight-control systems. Tejas has four levels of redundancy stages for its flight-control computer.”

Tamilmani says Tejas has proved itself as a safe platform, and the Cemilac team interacts very closely with the users conducting the airworthiness certification.

“The envelope for IOC is frozen and we are working very closely with the [Indian Air Force] program management team at ADA and with other partners,” Tamilmani adds.

It Would Undergo a Bit Airframe changes to Accommodate new Kaveri Eco Engine with 90KN Thrust Getting designed for the MK2 version along with the Miniaturization Of Our AESA Radar is underway.....

The LCA Mark 2 will have a bigger and more powerful engine, the fuselage will be changed, it will have bigger wings, and the aircraft will be more aerodynamic,The IAF is expected to eventually order up to 220 LCAs MK 1 and the Indian navy another 20" says Hindustan Aeronautics chairman Ashok Baweja,

what a moment it will be, Iam actually very happy that GTRE is not waiting for Snechma to give us a 90 Kn engine rather developing on its own.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THEY HAVE CHOSEN DEC.2010 FOR IOC OF LCA
IS THERE ANY REASON OR JUST THEY ARE STILL EVALUATING AND TESTING?

LCA Mk-II will need an engine with thrust of atleast 100 KN..Even if GTRE delivers KAVERI ( I am doubtful )with 90 KN ,It will still be under powered..I would rather see EJ-2K in LCA than an underpowered engine...

Only way KAVERI can be inducted is when GTRE keeps upgrading KAVERI so that it meets the requirement of AMCA and AURA..

The another point is, the main reason to go for a fireign engine in Mk1 was the reliability of that engine due to LCA being a single seat fighter. Kaveri being a 3-4 Kn less than GE in dry thurst....Now they will not go for Kaveri in MK2 for the same reason (single engine)....

The only one thing I was pointing out that They are trying to make it to 90 Kn on their own, which is a good sign, so when some one comes for an improvement, they just have to increase it to another 10 Kn which might save some time. It will be an upgrade and not a complete redesign.

By the way I think 2 90 Kn engine for AMCA will still be good sonsidering its a medium class fighter.

The Kind of weapons AMCA is supposed to carry ( BRAHMOS, K-100, ASTRA-2 and other precision strike bombs ) in its internal bays ,I suspect It will be a true medium class fighter. And We would like it to supercruise as well..
i dont think AMCA will be supercruising with KAVERI in full load. We will be needing two engines with DRY THRUST of 90KN each for an ambitious project.

We all had a discussion in PAKFA thread and it looks like we understood that PAKFA will not be carried out internaly, Th best will be externaly.

And We would like it to supercruise as well..

SAAB claims that Gripen supercruises. So a higher thurst engine is not necessary for supersruise. But in case of AMCA it has to be a real clever design.
