Fiji to remove union jack from flag, says PM

Good decision. Fiji has long been an independent country. And personally, I don't see why any country should have the union jack after years of being independent. Australia, New Zealand, Tuvalu, Fiji etc are all sovereign countries with their own self-respect, image and their status, whatever it is around the world.

Having the Union Jack means still accepting the rule and the thinking of the British which these days, even the British people don't.

Similarly, Canada is an independent respected country. They should remove the queen's photo from their currency notes. There must be someone whose image they could put on theirs. How about the image of whoever was ruling Canada before the British came?

All this is mere symbolism.

Instead of changing names & flags nations need better quality of life , development & progress.

Has Sri Lanka become any better after Ceylon ? Similarly politicians have renamed countless towns, cities & states across S Asia , how has it helped ?

Yes there is a question if we did actually get freedom.. Ceylon was actually a jewel in the crown of the British empire,One of there most prosperous colonies.. There is an argument that if they ruled another two decades Ceylon would have surpassed many in Asia in development and human capital

Most cases the power was transferred by the colonists to the ruling classes of the societies.. Many of then rendering even worse, Colonialism held together fragile nations rife with ethnic tensions, Often blamed on the colonists as divide and rule, People ignore these rifts that date back thousands of years not necessarily products of colonialism

Case in point India and even Ceylon
