FIFA World Cup 2022

Good news for Iran. Harry Maguire is defending for England.

Embarrassing performance from Iran. They are never going to make it out of a World Cup group. They have one of the worst World Cup records of any nation in World Cup history.

Only the Arab looking Irani player (Taremi) was somewhat good.

And why the hell did they not sing their own national anthem? A protest against the Mullahs?

Iran is lucky that their group is one of the weakest so a miracle (them qualifying for the first time to the knockout stage) is a possibility as Wales and USA are really weak teams.

Curious to see how the other 4 Arab teams not named Qatar will do. Unluckily that they are all in difficult groups.

I think it would be mostly a surprise if they make it past 4th place in their groups. Marocco should be able to defeat Canada and Tunesia against Australia might be a draw. Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia will finish 4th in groups.

They claimed it was in solidarity to the "protesting" going on. I never like seeing teams and players -- especially on the largest sporting stage -- bring whatever distraction with them. Despite the good intentions, leave it out of such a huge event you worked so hard to get to. Never made any sense to me but hey, it is what it is.

Here's the simpler image of the groupings.

DOHA: England made a scintillating start to their World Cup campaign as Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham inspired a 6-2 rout of outclassed Iran in Monday's Group B opener in Doha.

Saka and Bellingham were England's driving forces with dynamic displays that underlined their emergence as two of the game's brightest young stars.
Bellingham, 19, shattered Iran's hopes of frustrating England when he rose to head his maiden senior international goal in the first half.

Gareth Southgate's side were in sparkling form at the Khalifa International Stadium and goals from Saka and Raheem Sterling put them in complete control before half-time.

Saka, 21, netted again after the interval and, although Mehdi Taremi struck twice for Iran, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish completed the demolition.

There will be far sterner tests to come for England as they bid to win their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

But this was a welcome step in the right direction for Southgate, whose team arrived in Qatar on a six-match winless run that triggered scathing criticism of the Three Lions boss and his perceived negative tactics.

The only concern for Southgate was the sight of Harry Maguire being replaced in the second half after being checked for a potential head injury.

Nice stadiums!! they have spent too much on these games At 220billion dollars given all the bad pr in the west it has generated for them..

lol, that's just crazy if that number is actually correct. $220 billion might be stretching it a little, even if this is over the 12-year span? Crazy being such a tiny patch of desert sitting on arguably the largest gas reservoir in the world is insane. And you also wonder how much return on investment will that get Qatar over the span of the tournament, which is what, 2 months or so? Incredible.

Too much politics in this world cup.. it's killing the event.

Football is tribal mate , I’m hoping for England v Germany , England v Argentina . if they happen will be fireworks
It’s serious is this game and it’s being turned into a corporate business .
Footballs gone woke shit . Time it was taken back by the fans .

Damn... I just caught the england vs Iran highlights and Iran got raped... lmao

It only took 4 goals for Iranian ghairat to wake up..
