Pakistan manufactures official match-ball for FIFA World Cup 2022

Pakistan manufactures official match-ball for FIFA World Cup 2022

FIFA World Cup is set to commence in Doha, Qatar on 21st November.

LAHORE (Web Desk) - The official match football for the upcoming FIFA World Cup has been produced in Pakistan, making it the country’s significant contribution to the mega soccer event.

The ball named "Al-Rihla" has been unveiled by sports company, Adidas. Al-Rihal is an Arabic word that translates to ‘the journey. The ball has been made in Pakistan by Adidas, the second largest sports manufacturer in the world. The official match ball incorporates the culture of Qatar boats, the flag, and the architecture of Qatar.

The ball was unveiled by World Cup winners Iker Casillas and Kaka in a glittering ceremony in Doha, Qatar.

Adidas has been manufacturing the balls for the mega event consecutively for the past 14 years. Pakistan has been the official makers of match-ball since the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Pakistan did not make official match-balls in 2010 and 2014 but was provided contracts for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

FIFA World Cup is set to commence in Doha, Qatar on 21st November. Meanwhile, Pakistan itself is not participating in the tournament despite having a team and a following for the sports in the country.

FIFA has currently placed a ban on Pakistan Football Team for third-party meddling in the Pakistan Football Federation.

Meanwhile, Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s senior vice-president Sheikh Zohaib Rafique Sethi has confirmed in a statement that Pakistan’s ball "Al-Rihla" will be used in the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup.

He further said that famous company of Sialkot Forward Sports has made the football for the tournament.

Sheikh Zohaib said that this is the first time that football made in Sialkot will be used in the World Cup. While he added that this is the third time football of Forward Sports is being used in the World Cup.

Although Adidas prevents Forward Sports from revealing the exact number of footballs that it will supply for the World Cup, Akhtar mentioned that it is “not in thousands but millions”.

Regarding the design of the official football, he said, “We have made some changes in (the design of) footballs this time, keeping Qatar’s culture, environment, architecture, and flag in mind”.

Akhtar explained that the footballs will be environment-friendly and ‘thermo-bonded’, and have been created using only water-based inks and glues have been used for the first time.

Thermo-bonded footballs were first introduced in the 2014 World Cup, prior to which Pakistan had supplied hand-stitched footballs for most of the World Cups between the 1990s and 2010. Their panels do not have stitches but are made by attaching the panels through heat — the latest technology that Adidas adopted and passed on to Forward Sports in 2013.

Forward Sports was also the official football provider of the 2014 and 2018 World Cups in Brazil and Russia, and currently produces footballs for the German Bundesliga, French League, and the Champions League. Meanwhile, rising inflation, energy tariffs, and labor costs have not hindered business.

Its Chairman stated that “everything is running smoothly, as we chalked out our plans, keeping all these factors in mind. In fact, we have hired some additional labor to ensure on-time deliveries”.

Meanwhile, Sialkot also exports sports goods such as cricket bats, hockey sticks, shining (cricket and hockey), and accessories like kits, shoes, and gloves. Pakistan makes $1 billion a year by exporting sports goods, of which $350 million to $500 million come from footballs alone.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd running of the FIFA World Cup competition, the quadrennial international men's football championship contested by the senior national teams of the member associations of FIFA.

It is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022. This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world, and the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
In addition, the tournament will be the last to involve 32 teams, with an increase to 48 teams scheduled for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Due to Qatar's intense summer heat, this World Cup will be held from late-November to mid-December, making it the first tournament not to be held in May, June, or July; it will be played in a reduced timeframe of around 29 days. The first match played at the tournament will be contested between Qatar and Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor.

The final is due to be held on 18 December 2022, which also is Qatar National Day. The reigning World Cup champions are France.

Pakistan's cabinet has approved a draft agreement that allows the government to provide troops for security at the Fifa World Cup in Qatar later this year, Pakistan's information minister said on Monday.

A summary outlining the agreement, to be signed between Doha and Islamabad, was approved by the cabinet, minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said, ahead of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Qatar starting Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear when the agreement would be signed between the two countries.

The cabinet summary, reviewed by Reuters, said the government of Qatar had requested assistance in security-related aspects of the World Cup between Nov. 20 and Dec. 18 2022, and that Pakistan's military had proposed the signing of an agreement between both states for the purpose.

"The agreement aims to define the obligations of the two parties, the specific specialisations, and the number of security personnel to be sent by Pakistan to participate in the security and safety operations," the summary read.

Qatar’s government media office did not immediately confirm or respond to a request to explain why Doha has requested the Pakistani troops or what they will be doing during the tournament.

There was also no immediate response from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, which is overseeing the organisation of the World Cup, including security.

The summary did not provide any details of the agreement such as how many personnel could be sent.

The approval of the agreement comes a day before Prime Minister Sharif departs for Doha on a two-day visit starting on Tuesday.

Sharif will be accompanied by his cabinet ministers, according to a government handout on Monday.

"The two sides will discuss bilateral relations between the two countries, especially to move forward cooperation in energy, trade, and investment opportunities," the handout said.

Sharif is also scheduled to visit a football stadium in Doha where he will be briefed about the efforts undertaken by the Qatari government in the World Cup, the handout added.

FIFA confirms change to start date of 2022 Qatar World Cup

By Issy Ronald and Matt Foster, CNN
August 12, 2022

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar begins in 100 days.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar begins in 100 days.

(CNN) The men's 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will begin a day earlier than originally scheduled allowing the host nation to play the first game when it faces Ecuador, FIFA -- the global governing body for the sport of football -- officially confirmed on Thursday.

Following a unanimous decision by the Bureau of the FIFA Council, the tournament will now begin on November 20 instead of November 21 when three games had been scheduled, with Senegal vs. the Netherlands previously set to open the event.

"The FIFA World Cup 2022 will kick off with an even greater celebration for local and international fans as host country Qatar will now play Ecuador on Sunday, 20 November at 19:00 as part of a stand-alone event," a statement from FIFA said.

The decision will ensure "the continuity of a long-standing tradition" in which the first match of a World Cup features either the hosts or the defending champions.
It "followed an assessment of the competition and operational implications, as well as a thorough consultation process and an agreement with key stakeholders and the host country," the statement continued.

The Qatar World Cup will now begin on November 20.

As a consequence of this move, Senegal's match against the Netherlands has been rescheduled from the afternoon to the evening of November 21.

However, the release period for players will remain unchanged, beginning on November 14.

FIFA also noted that "ticket holders will be duly notified by email that the relevant matches have been rescheduled and their tickets will remain valid irrespective of the new date/time."

A statement released on Friday by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy of the Qatar 2022 World Cup affirmed the host nation's support for the decision.

"The impact of this decision on fans was assessed by FIFA. We will work together to ensure a smooth tournament for the supporters affected by the change," it said.

"With 100 Days to Go, Qatar is ready. We look forward to welcoming the world for an historic edition of the FIFA World Cup."

The tournament will now take place from November 20 to December 18.

Bad optics yet again.

Sending a police or a commando force would make sense.

Qatari football team has only qatari arabs in it? Or those with iqamas too? Just asking

KARACHI: A contingent of Pakistan Army left for Qatar on Monday to assume security duties for the FIFA World Cup 2022, Radio Pakistan reported.
The contingent consisting of officers, junior commissioned officers and other Pakistan Army personnel departed from Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi.
The troops will assist the Qatari government in security duties for the global event.

The government of the Gulf nation has already signed agreements with the US, the UK, Morocco and Turkey to provide troops, assistance and training.
Turkey will send 3,250 security officers while Nato will also provide security during the event. Additionally, South Korea will send five police officers specialising in counterterrorism to Qatar, Al Jazeera reported.
Meanwhile, the UK has also announced that it would provide military support to “deliver a safe and secure” World Cup.
“The Ministry of Defence will support Qatar with military capabilities to counter terrorism and other threats to the tournament. This will include maritime security support from the Royal Navy, advanced venue search training, operational planning and command and control support, and further specialist advice,” the UK government said in a statement.
The Gulf nation has also called up hundreds of civilians, including diplomats summoned back from overseas, for mandatory military service, according to Reuters.
They will be trained to manage stadium security queues, frisk fans and detect contraband such as alcohol, drugs or weapons.
The event will begin on Nov 20, with the final to be played on Dec 18, 2022.

Qatar emir slams ‘unprecedented’ campaign against World Cup hosts

AFP
October 25, 2022

DOHA: Qatar has been hit by an “unprecedented campaign” of criticism over preparations for the football World Cup, its ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani said Tuesday, calling the attacks “defamation”.

“Since we won the honour of hosting the World Cup, Qatar has been subjected to an unprecedented campaign that no host country has faced,” the emir said in a speech.

FIFA awarded the World Cup to Qatar in 2010 and it has since spent tens of billions of dollars on preparations.

But the energy-rich Gulf state has faced constant scrutiny over its treatment of foreign workers as well as LGBTQ and women’s rights.

“We initially dealt with the matter in good faith, and even considered that some criticism was positive and useful, helping us to develop aspects that need to be developed,” the emir told Qatar’s legislative council.

“But it soon became clear to us that the campaign continues, expands and includes defamation and double standards, until it reached an amount of ferocity that made many wonder, unfortunately, about the real reasons and motives behind this campaign,” he said.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said the Qatar World Cup, the first in an Arab nation, will be the “best ever”.
