ISLAMABAD: The former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf failed to appear before National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigators in relation to the Rs22 billion Rental Power Projects (RPPs) scam on Tuesday, DawnNews reported.

Ashraf informed NAB in a written reply that due to his illness he would not be able to appear before investigators.

Earlier, the bureau had summoned the former premier, who is among the accused in the RPP case, on Tuesday to record his statement in the scam.

According to media reports, the name of former prime minister, who has been defeated in his home constituency, has been put on the Exit Control List (ECL) after he allegedly tried to leave the country along with members of his family. But the reports have not been confirmed by NAB.

“It is yet to be confirmed whether his name has been put on the ECL,” NAB’s spokesman Ramzan Sajid told Dawn on Monday.

In the RPP scam, nine firms were accused of receiving more than Rs22 billion as mobilisation advance from the government to commission the projects, but most of them did not set up their plants and a few which installed some plants after an inordinate delay. Of the total recoverable amount of Rs22 billion, NAB has so far recovered Rs5 billion, in addition to Rs8 billion paid by the firms on the directives of the Supreme Court.

It has been learnt that NAB has decided to file a reference against the accused, including the former prime minister, three former federal ministers and four former federal secretaries.

“As per directives of the Supreme Court, NAB has to file the reference on the RPP scam before May 27,” said a senior NAB officer who did not want to be named.

He confirmed that the reference was being submitted against 16 accused.

ch nisar can't do a shyt against m. riaz, riaz is equally powerful without wearing political banner he has top contacts in ghq-navy-police...remember how the riaz-cj's son case got sore and vanished from the scene the whole commission was disbanded so i don't think anyone can touch m. riaz.

you do you think Malik Riaz is? he is not some illiterate politician who gained all this overnight just like that, the only reason nobody has been able to touch him yet is because he has support from upper echelon of GHQ / armed forces, thats why you will face DHA and Bahria town face to face with each other....anyhow lets not go off-topic here.
@Slav Defence, indeed it is avery good news but this is not justice, it will be justice when they bring back all the looted money back to this country, all that money which Raja Rental spent to his constitutency and to buy vote bank, the money which he looted with this RPP, if CJ wanted to set an example than he should have given the verdict when Raja was in Power, it doesn't matter if he had immunity or not because arresting him is a while different story

@balixd i am not labelling CJ as a hero nor I am chanting that CJ is god of justice...if you check my previous post then you will find out my views regarding with Ashraf's arrest and judiciary..I already said that there is law that:"Big fish eats small fish"
my views clearly reflect the above quote...why would you expect from our corrupt judiciary to give verdict to Raja rental when he was in power?
The truth is..arrest of Ashraf is just a show off for judiciary, a chance to make good scoring for Mr Shareef,while law and enforcement sectors and NAB will get a chance to clean black spot on their reputation.
Only people of Pakistan may be 'avenged' by arresting him..

I dont think Army will do anything, Kayani will be worried about his own future and will be all compliant to N league...Zardari has no relevance now in this scenario and he is just counting his days.

Unless Malik Riaz comes in with some offer, Zardari will go down or go abroad and Army will just spectate.

It's not that Army will be self-motivated. I do suspect that US and UAE/Iran will also play major role in dictating army's behavior. US would certainly want a safe passage for Zardari. N would also want to avoid un-necessary confrontation as PPP is sure to exploit sindh card if zardari is put to trial. The smoothest situtaion would be some plea-bargain where Zardari would be allowed free against compensation of claims under these cases.

Raja Rental was one of the most corrupt Prime Ministers Pakistan has elected in its history. He showed no progress and did nothing to end the electricity crisis and instead ate up Millions. Pakistan should take some major steps to curb terrorism and electricity crisis and end the menace once and for all.
