"Fencing has divided our nations & families on both sides. We want to have an atmosphere that doesn’t require fencing"- Taliban

His sentiment is correct, a border situation like US-CAN is the ideal and until circumstances allow tough border security including fencing is needed.

I support the Durand Line, however, I would be lying if I said that the Durand Line does not tear the Pashtun belt in half. There are genuine problems the Pashtuns will face when frequently travelling between the two countries. However, it is important that the Taliban realize, that the fence is a matter of national security for Pakistan.

It's easy to run over a country with AKs on Toyota Hiluxes, however, running a country is a completely different ballgame. The future of Afghanistan is still uncertain as there is still no functioning government, the banks are empty, there are no functioning institutions and no money to pay to government employees. If the situation gets out of control, and the Taliban start fighting among themselves, for example, then this border fence will be very helpful.

Mod Edit: Quoting propaganda tweet.

Govt will give its position (on fencing b/w Afg & Pak) when its formed. However our people are concerned & don’t agree with it. Fencing has divided our nations & families on both sides. We want to have an atmosphere that doesn’t require fencing,”

It is going to remain a cold issue but not a hot issue.

TTA won't accept the IB but unlike "Attock Tukk Gang", they won't be planning to conquer "their lands".

So everyone please calm down, after visible security improvements, both countries can have relaxed inter-state traveling agreement and integrated economy.

Just relax guys :)

Sometimes, I feel like this "second home" slogan is euphemism for greater Afghanistan, that it, "you have our lands". Afghanistan is Afghanistan. Pakistan is Pakistan. Perhaps in the future, peace will allow people to move freely between the two countries, but right now it is not happening as Afghanistan is a powder keg that can go off at any time. We put a fence on our border, and manned it to protect ourselves. If TB don't want to do anything on their end, that is their choice.

No matter who runs afgonistan they will always be snakes towards pakistan. Yes pak can remove fences only if it can be replaced with nuke mines.

Time is ripe to merge Afghanistan & Pakistan. Pushtuns are our brothers.

No. Punjabhis will still be the majority.

Afghans need to work out their issues (including economic ones), and while I’m not saying they need help, from anyone and everyone, at the moment, they need to be willing to merge if that is what they want. We can’t afford to go into such a project and have them back out after we invest so much into it.

At the moment the priority, IMHO, for the Afghans, has to be national unification and preventing an economic collapse. What they can do is seek foreign advisors to professionalize their police forces and seek small loans/aid to keep their country stable on a month to month basis. Once they have security as tight as they can, they should attract investors ASAP in not just mining but other opportunities, considering their location, resources and labor pool. One thing they could do is rebuild the agricultural system on a priority basis. Foreign (European) NGOs could be enticed to pay for laborers to rebuild agricultural infrastructure to prevent a migration of 2-10 million in the nest few months. If people have some hope they may stay, and hopefully some that stay include the most technically educated. Another option is foreign experts, funded by foreign NGOs sending in people to train locals to run equipment.

If NGOs pay people to bring potentially arable land into cultivation, they can help millions survive long enough to find a way to stay in Afghanistan. Security has been resolved to a great degree, now is the time to build the irrigation systems. Putting millions of Afghans to work in the fields can keep millions off the migration path.
This is the time (when labor will be at its cheapest) to build up the irrigation system, similar to the way the Japanese doctor; Dr. Nakamura did in Jalalabad province. Perhaps the Japanese would be contribute to funding of such an initiative, in honor of Dr. Nakamura, but this time on a nation wide scale.

All this is to say, the fence should be seen as helping the Talibs limit having to bite off more than they can chew. It should focus them on achieving results and governing in the territory they currently control, and work out solutions for now, with the neighbors, until the most pressing issues are addressed. Hopefully by then, safety will be manageable and GDP per capita will catch up, and investment will come in, where these issues won’t be as much an issue anymore.

So far the Taliban have said to Pakistan: a) we will do nothing about TTP b) we do not respect the Durand line.

With “friends” like these...
With enemies like you, I will take friends like them anyday.

well if talib can guarantee that afghani land will NOT be used against Pakistan and I mean not even diddly squat worth of trouble then slowly but surely over time a schengen system can be brought in.

Personally I have 0 issue with it because movement of people cannot be stopped. It just cant.

I know people will get their knickers in a twist but I rather afghnistan was a stable nation and people can move across freely with checks and balances assured by taliban where any afghan causing problem gets sent to afghani land to be punished then that is fine by me.

to break the ice hand mohsin dawar, ali wajir and pisteen to be taken care of by taliban. then other refugees as well.

Na no open borders. Cant trust them. I would rather have borders sealed with our brethren

A response should come from MOA that taliban should refrain from giving sweeping statements like these. They are no body to talk about Pakistanis. Worry about Afghans first specially those residing here for decades. Take them them, give afghans a reason to live in Afghanistan and than talk about opening or relaxing border rules.

.
Open borders my arse so get a visa and get in line at border crossing. We didn't spend over a billion dollars erecting fence and even lost precious soldiers at the hands of Afghanis just so you retards could throw your economic CAOS onto us. Manage your economy if you cant then relinquish govt to more competent people. Border fence is here to stay.

.
The problem is if it ever happens... Afghans will continue hating us and regard this part or United Pakistan as Punjabistan and will continue bad mouthing Pakistan. There is hardly anything to offer by Afghanistan... We have hosted their refugees, we give them free access to the sea, we handle their trade, we have helped them financially, we fought their war of independence against Soviets etc... In return all they do is bad mouth and talk about Durand line...
A continuation of above thought. Wouldn't they have more muscle and leverage and say in running of things in united AFPAK? Considering Pushtoons would almost double in number. Would effectively become second largest.
