FDA constructs eight small dams despite all odds

Despite difficult circumstances in FATA, the FATA Development Authority has succeeded in completing eight small dams; two each in Bajaur, Kurram, North Waziristan and one each in Khyber and South Waziristan agencies. The work on four such schemes; one each at Danday and Kand in North Waziristan Agency as well as one each at Zao in Khyber Agency and Parwara in FR D I Khan is in progress whereas feasibility studies for 25 small dams is also in progress.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor, Barrister Masood Kausar, while appreciating the marvellous achievements of the Authority has desired that there should be emergent arrangements not only to fully functionalise all the developmental projects as and when completed but also ensure their efficient and proper maintenance and make them fully beneficial for the respective people at the earliest.

This, he observed and stated while presiding over a briefing to review pace of progress on construction of small dams and water resources in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well as FATA at Governor's House, Peshawar on Wednesday.

The Chief Executive Attaullah Khan, General Manager Technical of FDA and the General Manager, Small Dams of the province, briefed the Governor which besides the Secretary to Governor, Sikandar Qayyum was also attended by senior authorities of Irrigation departments and small dams organisations of both the province and FATA; SHYDO and representatives of Planning & Development departments.

The Governor also noted with satisfaction that out of 120 identified sites for construction of small dams; with their catchment area of 17196 square KM and available flow of 0.4537 m acre feet water in FATA alone, 45 to 50 sites of small dam projects with expected storage capacity of 144,000 acre feet and command area of 45,000 acres have already been adjudged feasible.

"We should also need to protect the cultivatable lands in the expected command areas of the small dam projects to be encroached or developed for other purposes instead of cultivation and regulate the ground factors properly in the best interest of FATA itself and the respective people"
, he said.

As far as the construction of small dams in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is concerned, the Governor also noted with satisfaction that the areas, confronted with severe nature of scarcity of water especially the southern districts of the province are being given top most priority and work on quite a good number of projects is already in progress. "Indeed there is a vast potential to tap water resources for socio-economic uplift of the people and it is encouraging to note that no effort is being spared in the best interests of the people of the province as well", he said.

Talking on a point with regard to benefits of the small dam projects, the Governor also desired that apart from irrigation, flood mitigation; land reclamation and fisheries development, there is also a need to have continued process of research studies to make such projects fully beneficial for the people and ensure their development from aesthetic point of view as well.

Besides, he further desired, constant arrangement is also must for capacity building of the respective organisations and to ensure their close contact with relevant research organisations of national and international repute to make the latest technologies and means required for construction of small dams accessible to the builders. People of FATA, especially during the recent past, have suffered a lot and early completion of all such projects is a must to ease the life in the respective areas, he said.
