All is not well in FBR: Shabbar Zaidi to decide today on going on leave

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Shabbar Zaidi is not feeling well and will today (Friday) decide to go on leave for an indefinite period.

When The News contacted him in this regard Thursday night, he said, “I will decide on the medical advice tomorrow (Friday)”.

Rumors are rife in the federal capital that Shabbar had informed Adviser to the PM on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and other top government functionaries on Thursday that he wasgoing on a long leave from coming Monday. His aides told this reporter that Shabbar had cancelled many meetings this week, as he was not feeling well.

It has been learnt that Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh visited the FBR for the first time in six months leaving its top guns red faced, as he showed his displeasure at the FBR’s performance.

He also arranged several meetings with the textile tycoons at the finance ministry to resolve the issue of refunds payment through FASTER software but this lingering controversy could not be solved, disturbing him a lot. After the meeting at the FBR headquarters, the chairman applied for a two-week leave on medical grounds.

Earlier, Shabbar Zaidi had gone on a sick leave from January 6 to January 19. On January 11, the FBR rejected rumors about ‘any sort of rift in the government economic team'.

“Rumors of any sort of rift in the economic team is utterly incorrect," said the FBR in a statement adding that Shabbar Zaidi was on a two-week leave. However, insiders say things are not as smooth as has been claimed by the FBR. It is yet to see whether Shabbar will prefer to stay or leave the office after getting medical advice on Friday (today), concluded the sources.

shabbar zaidi has taken a lot of flak over his stupid 50k NIC policy and failure to rein in the 'tajirs' ( not that he could do any thing in the first place, arm twisting tajirs the least )

i believe the work pressure has taken a toll and he is jumping ship

فیڈرل بورڈ آف ریونیو (ایف بی آر) کے چیئرمین شبر زیدی نے اپنے عہدے سے استعفیٰ دے دیا۔

انہوں نے صحت کی خرابی کے باعث عہدہ چھوڑا ہے، جبکہ فیصلے سے متعلق اعلیٰ حکام کو بھی آگاہ کر دیا ہے۔

شبر زیدی 31 جنوری کو دوسری بار چھٹیوں پر گئے تھے۔ ڈاکٹرز نے شبر زیدی کو ذہنی تناؤ سے بچنے کےلیے مکمل آرام کا مشورہ دیا ہے۔

شبر زیدی کو مئی 2019 میں چیئرمین ایف بی آر تعینات کیا گیا تھا۔

His role was one of key most difficult one and some how he was successful. Now to search a new person in his role will be challenging for gov keeping in mind targets for tax collection is really really tough and we already falling behind the target.

Chairman FBR Shabbar Zaidi has not resigned

Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Syed Shabbar Zaidi, has not resigned from the post of FBR chief, it was learnt on Tuesday.

Reports circulated regarding the resignation of Chairman FBR Shabbar Zaidi, it was reported that he has informed the top officials of his decision, after resigning from the post due to health problems.

However, Zaidi later denied the news saying that he has not resigned from the post of FBR Chairman, and said that he cannot continue further work due to health problems, and has informed the top officials of the decision as well.

The health of FBR chairman is very poor, said adviser on finance Abdul Hafeez Shaikh. The advisor informed that Zaidi is on a long leave.

Talking about Zaidi's replacement Sheikh said that the government will seek a new Chairman FBR, if Zaidi's health doesn't improve. Will seek new chairman in consultation with Shabbar Zaidi, the advisor said. Shabbar return to the office will be decided by the doctor, he added.

On Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan asked Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Revenue Haroon Akhtar Khan to suggest names for new Chairman FBR in case Shabbar Zaidi is unable to continue as Chairman FBR due to his health issues.

When contacted on Monday, Shabbar Zaidi told Business Recorder, “Not well. Got better but it has again worsened. Inshallah will be better again".

Earlier, Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh dismissed reports regarding the removal of Shabbar Zaidi, terming it ‘completely false'. “We want Shabbar Zaidi to get well soon and return to the office," he said.

However, if Zaidi's condition does not improve, alternative options can be considered, Sheikh added.

Meanwhile, the name of Ahmed Mujtaba Memon, a man who reportedly has the confidence of Hafeez Sheikh, is making the rounds at the Finance Ministry and the FBR for the slot of chairman FBR after Shabbar Zaidi went on medical leave for the second time this month.

I wonder why patwaris have an issue with Shabbar Zaidi.... Maybe because he was trying to automate everything to eliminate corruption and this would mean the cash cows of these patwaris would be strangled.

FBR system should be 100% automated. Less humans intersection, less corruption.
Government must bring 100% digitalization to reduce 50% of government overhead and corruption.

Every Business has to be registered in Pakistan and must file taxes.
