FBI gathers evidence to follow trail in Karachi
New Delhi: Behind the diplomacy to drum up international pressure on Pakistan after the Mumbai attacks, an unprecedented cooperation between Indian investigating agencies and the FBI has prepared the grounds for the latter to now take investigations into Pakistan as the next step.
Its learnt that the FBI has gathered more than sufficient evidence and has got several leads for it to travel to Pakistan and pick up the trail. Sources said the FBI is now likely to move the US Government to get necessary clearances to visit Pakistan, particularly Karachi, for further investigation.
Sources said the Mumbai police provided the FBI with unbridled access over the past few weeks. Besides interrogating Amir Ajmal Kasab, the FBI carried out a comprehensive technical probe of the communication equipment used by the terrorists. This generated a wealth of information, sources said, much of which points to Pakistan. Since six US nationals were killed in the attacks, the FBI is required by US law to complete the investigative trail.
Although the Terror network linked to the Mumbai attacks may have erased its footprints by now, India is hopeful a follow-up probe by the FBI will yield results. But Islamabad, which has already rejected a UK request to interrogate detainees, may not let the FBI in.
