Fanaticism conquers Turkey
MUSTAFA AKYOL

For the past two years, Turkey has been in a downward political spiral where the language of hatred and demonization overshadows everything else. The spiral is only getting deeper and deeper by jumping to new levels with every new political crisis and drama.

The terror attack against prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz, which took place last Tuesday within the colossal courthouse in central Istanbul, was one such level-jumper. The late Mr. Kiraz was overlooking the case of Berkin Elvan, a 15-year-old boy who had tragically died because of an injury he took to his head during the Gezi Park protests of summer 2013. The injury was caused by a police tear-gas canister and prosecutor Kiraz was really trying his best to figure out which police officers were responsible.

But in the eyes of the DHKP-C, the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party–Front, an illegal Marxist-Leninist terror group, the entire “state” was responsible for the murder of Berkin, who they wanted to avenge. That is the background of why two members of the DHKP-C entered the courthouse last Tuesday cloaked as lawyers, entered prosecutor Kiraz’s room, took out their guns and held him captive. After six hours of bargaining, a police operation began, only to end with the two terrorists killed and the prosecutor found dead. There was no doubt this was a terrorist crime, the DHKP-C is a terror threat and Turkey’s courthouses need better security. But since the murder, the ongoing political madness focused on something else: The demonization of non-pro-government newspapers, including Hurriyet, as “supporters of terrorism.”

The “logic” to this ridiculous campaign is nothing more than a photo Hurriyet and various other papers published the day after the attack. It shows the DHKP-C terrorists holding the prosecutor captive, with a gun pointed to his head. This, the government and its lackeys argue, amounts to nothing but “terrorist propaganda,” regardless of the fact all headlines and captions were full of condemnations of the attack. (The equivalent to this would be to condemn Western media sources for “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [ISIL] propaganda” for merely publishing images of ISIL terrorists with their hostages.) While the ethics of such news making is debatable, to see a conspiratorial support for terrorism in it is preposterous. But, alas, the government is missing no opportunity to further intimidate its opponents.

The intimidation first came out with the statements by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğluand President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who condemned the newspapers that published the heretical photo as “immoral” and “treacherous.” Erdoğan even said, “This is the greatest treason I have ever seen.” In no time, an Istanbul prosecutor, apparently enlightened by the executive’s views, launched a criminal investigation against Hürriyet and three other newspapers, all of them conspicuously non-pro-government.

You know what the craziest side of the story is? Two pro-government newspapers published the same photo as well, and two others initially used it on their websites, only to delete it later. But nobody blamed them for “terrorist propaganda” because there is no terrorist propaganda here - with the possible exception of some marginal ultra-left circles. There is, however, propaganda, intimidation and witch-hunting against whoever dares to oppose the government. And the fanaticism behind this zeal is getting worse and worse every day, with no safe exit at sight.

Some of those pro-leftist newspapers called the terrorists mere 'activists'. This is unheard of, this is treachery. Go ahead and try to call an isis or whatever terrorist an activist in the same situation in the US or Europe, your journalist career would be over. The leftists or pro-dhkp-c figures in Turkey are playing double standard. As long as people who do not share their views die, it's ok and they will not call the attackers 'terrorists'. Just like the pro-kurdish bdp and hdp are apologetic about the pkk and their street thugs. Pathetic.

Bro punishing a newspaper just because of publishing pictures of a breaking news and calling it terror propaganda even thought the group was mentioned explicitely as terrorists in the article/headline while sparing the pro goverment news papers is censorship, no need to sugar coat it.

Accusing newspapers which are almost as old as the republic itself, like Hurriyet and Cumhuriyet with making terrorist propaganda over a photo, and using that as an excuse to build even more pressure on them is exactly what AKP and its Sultan would do. They even closed YouTube and Twitter over it. But when you ask about it, they are doing a splendid job at advancing freedoms in Turkey. :disagree:

Some people should slow the fvck down and think twice before using the words treason and traitor.

Such pictures only harm the people who see such things and encourage the ones who are pro-dhkp-c, of which there are quite many it seems. For that same matter, for example, i wouldn't like to see a picture of Turkish soldiers lined up by pkk or isis before or during they were shot, even if it's journalism it's not appropriate imo. Though i agree that branding newspapers 'supporting terrorism' without warning goes too far.

Anyway, my main gripe with some of those newspapers is the way they called those terrorists activists. And this is treachery, nothing more. Then are we gonna allow some Kurdish newspapers to call pkk terrorists activists too?

Total BS.

Youtube, Facebook, Twitter immediatlly deletes content related to Daesh.
But if the we face a similar sitiaton in Turkey. Turkey blocking freedom of press.... :meeting:

Our Zionist friend @Solomon2 who is a very biassed person and conducting propaganda for Israel in various forums and has a blog page where he throws shit on every country that has odds with Israel and paints Israel as a saint.....

The question of ethics is another one but the hypocrisy to punishing oppositional news papers while sparing the pro goverment ones is the problem here.

Can censorship ever be justified for the "greater good"?

Even this article says that those pro-govt newssites/papers deleted the pics later on. Probably they, perhaps all newspapers publishing the pics, received warnings to delete it, the ones who didnt received punishment. We can discuss journalism freedom, but if it trespasses a certain sensitivity, then it should be blocked just like the US, EU and other developed countries do. Let's agree to disagree.

Dailysabah has its biases and so does hurriyet, when I read their articles im laughing because both are putting in their own biases and both are publishing provocative articles to anger opposing groups.

The problem with the media in general is that they are publishing things to influence peoples thinking and way of life rather than just publishing information, if information was published without all of the authors opinions then I think it would be better for us all, but that doesn't exist in well known papers so you have to learn how to read and analyze it and understand why they have the opinions they present. Unfortunately most people don't have enough hours in the day to do this so they just believe what they are told without doing additional research, what they are being told is this good guy - bad guy story which is coming from both sides of the political spectrum, this causes destabilization in the country and makes people hate each other, eventually both sides turn to extremes and we end up with an ugly picture.

Another problem in Turkey is that people politicize everything (Football matches, drinking a certain beverage, the clothes, going to the mosque etc.) Stop doing that

I agree with you but mate, it is a fact is that oppositional news papers recieved record punishments in billion $ hight for the same things all newspapers do but you never hear a pro goverment news paper being punished, thats the point im trying to make.
