Facebook is run by CIA

If it isnt, it should be!
I mean where else does a person tell everything you want to know about their lives.

Who they are, what are their views, where they go, what they do, who their friends are.. what medical conditions do they suffer from?
identifying potential threats should be easy as pie.

Exactly. In my opinion, army should keep a check on army officers. As now everyone has a facebook account. Just imagine COAS having an account on FACEBOOK:

I have heard before also the CIA or rather NSA to be more precise running or monitoring social network sites..some believe it ...some ridicule it but hey as the saying goes " The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he does not exist"

There's this wonderful documentary called "The Secret History of the Silicon Valley". It shows how, even back in the 50's and 60's, American intelligence outfits were very active in Silicon Valley - working with comp companies to bug mainframe computers sold to other countries and firms. And those days, the silicon valley consisted of companies like IBM and DEC, and the level of information obtainable was much smaller.

Now, the whole world's data passes through silicon valley, it's a much juicier target. Very hard to believe they don't interfere at all now. Google and Facebook seem particularly pesky; google with it's "do no evil" has been repeatedly caught abusing it's users, they were caught actively sniffing WiFi traffic with their streetview project that crossed every major US&European city(Inside Google*|*A Consumer Watchdog Investigation), and their officials including then-CEO Eric Schmidt have repeatedly made it clear they don't believe in individual privacy("If you have something to hide, perhaps you shouldn't be doing it in the first place" as Schmidt puts it).

They like to maintain an illusion of honesty&integrity, but it would be foolish to fall for that.
