RMAF are probably more looking for trainer than fighter jet. PAF might try concentrated more effort for Iraq AF tender than RMAF.

Doesn't FA 50 use Israeli radar. The same ones used on India's Tejas. They also use the same F404 engine. Personally not fancying India's chances of selling Tejas to Malaysia, but the truth is, if Korea is an frontrunner despite Israeli avionics then India has an chance too. Especially with a team supposed to travel to India to take a look.

There is nothing that comes close to the JF 17 when you consider this combination of factors, which is why it has become a serious contender in various procurement drives around the world. Future compatibility with longer-range Chinese BVR missiles seals the deal for most.

Politics will probably play a large part of the deal. The best way to see it is to look at bids by the engines they use. Tejas is inferior to the F/A-50 as a trainer (at least). Then you have a Chinese engined platform, a European platform.

if they go for the GE powered aircraft its a signal they are firmly in the US camp. A Chinese or European platform may be best to make them neutral, similar to Finland during the Cold War.

I think they will go for a European platform; M-346 due to politics.

My personal opinion is that there is a higher chance of FA-50 or M-346.

Small question, will try bird retain it's Israeli avionics and armaments? Will their origin be a problem at all? And how will India manage to replace those parts?
Secondly, wouldn't buying the FA-50 be better? It'll ensure an easy leap into buying and integrating the KF-X.

As others already mentioned, China opted to replace JF-17 offering with their L-15 trainer as it is closer to what Malaysia is looking for.

I believe Malaysia would select FA-50 since its engine and armament are closer to F-18 that Malaysia already operates, and currently they are trying to procure more F-18s as well.

They can substitute - the Su-30MKM use siemens systems instead of the original Israeli in the Indian birds.

Since this is more to do with trainer, RMAF will have less emphasis on dispute. More to to do with spec and better economy ties with China to smoothen sea dispute. Just like how they purchase Chinese naval patrol ship

The FA-50, the nation's first domestically developed light attack aircraft, is competing against the Pakistani-Chinese jointly manufactured JF-17 fighter for the Malaysian Air Force's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program, under which Kuala Lumpur seeks to purchase 18 jets to replace its aging MiG-29 fleet, according to sources, Sunday.

"Despite interest from a diverse group of manufacturers, the FA-50 and JF-17 are the finalists," the source said.

The FA-50 is a variant of the T-50 supersonic trainer jet, manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).

Since its first deployment in October 2013, 60 FA-50s are operated by the Korean Air Force. In addition, the FA-50 has been exported to Iraq, the Philippines and Thailand.

Initially, France's Rafale, the multinational Eurofighter and the United States' F-18 were put forward for the Malaysian program, but the project has been downsized to purchasing light attack aircraft due to budget issues, giving a fighting chance to India's Tejas, Italy's M346 and Russia's Y-130.

Should the KAI win the deal, it would be a huge compensation for its failed exports to Argentina.

Despite interest from Buenos Aires, the KAI, which uses several British-made parts in the FA-50, was unable to close a deal for the sale of eight aircraft due to an arms embargo imposed by the British government on the South American country.

However, the FA-50 is reportedly behind the JF-17 in the race as the latter possesses a better mid-range weapons capacity which is a requirement of the Malaysian Air Force.
