The United States' top fighter jet, the Lockheed Martin F-22, has recently required more than 30 hours of maintenance for every hour in the skies, pushing its hourly cost of flying to more than $44,000, a far higher figure than for the warplane it replaces, confidential Pentagon test results show.
The aircraft's radar-absorbing metallic skin is the principal cause of its maintenance troubles, with unexpected shortcomings -- such as vulnerability to rain and other abrasion -- challenging Air Force and contractor technicians since the mid-1990s, according to Pentagon officials, internal documents and a former engineer.

Bloody good move on the Americans part.
The F-35s got enough tech. to get the job done.
But how can it take on the A-10s role.

It's too fast to take out small targets.
Plus how will it take out say, someone with a portable anti-aircraft missile launcher?

187 F-22 are enough to defeat any threat from any aircraft in the world.

Half of F-22 will be deployed in Hawaii and Japan to counter the Chinese and North Koreans while the rest will be stationed in USA and Germany.

China and Russia will not create an aircraft that can match the F-22 for another 40 years.

Only now China is building the J-10 which has similar capabilities to the 20 year old F-16.

considering the ratio of 150 kills to 1 with conventional American fighters which are considered at least .5 generation ahead of chinese/north korean fighters.

i think 90 f-22's are enough to deal with the entire plaaf.

oh and i think Israel/Japan might buy the f-22 so dont consider it dead, also when the economy recovers i GUARANTEE it'll be back in production

Nope, not until this level of technology is readily available from elsewhere, say, Russia. And that's a long way off. So no, the Israelis will probably be the first foreign customers for the F-35, but will have a very, very tough time acquiring F-22s.

Don't expect anyone to be offered the F-22 until the US has something better for itself. Also, the F-22 program will not be completely scrapped, this is just a hurdle. Further production down the line is almost inevitable, if for nothing else than at least to keep a technological advantage over all possible threats. In the meantime, the USAF will focus on integrating another very capable, but less so than the F-22, fighter; The F-35. Just like the world was not ready for the Concorde, the F-22 is, fortunately or unfortunately, slightly too much for these times.

F-22 was a solo US project to replace the F-15. Unlike the F-16, only Japan, Israel and Saudi Arabia have the F-15. The F-15 was designed as an interceptor to shoot down enemy aircraft, block enemy radars and take out missile installations. And thus it carries very sophisticated jamming equipment and top secret US equipement.

The only reason that USA exported F-15 to Saudi Arabia, Israel and Japan is because it thought it will be replacing it with F-22.

But since the F-35 can be fitted with advanced equipment to be an attack and interceptor aircraft. A pure interceptor aircraft like the F-22 is no longer needed.

The Red and Blue statements are contradictory if you consider the capabilities of the F-22 compared to your definition of the F-15. The F-22 was designed to do more than just replace the F-15. Also, the Green statement is false in the USAF scenario, the F-35 cannot eliminate the need for the F-22, yet. The Israelis and the Japanese have requested the F-22, Japan is even willing to accept a less-capable export version, it is a well known fact in the aviation industry, but the US will not let that level of technology out of their safe-lockers. Therefore, they surely believe that the need the F-22 to satisfy their defence needs (I can't see why, but then I am not a Japanese defence analyst). Otherwise, thanks for the enlightenment.
