F-35 stealth fighter crashes in coastal South Carolina

USMC confirms the F-35B crash out of VMFAT 501 at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, pilot ejected safely.
The incident still under investigation. This is the first-ever crash of an F35. The crash took place about 4 miles west of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina. The local County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the crash and said it happened at around 11:45 am local time.



In a statement, Marine Corps Capt. Christopher Harrison said the pilot was being evaluated by medical personnel. No civilians were injured, Harrison said.
The cause of the crash was under investigation, Harrison said.

The design phase started in 1997 {21 years ago) and the X-35 prototype flew in October 2000 (almost 18 years ago).

First VTOL flight of the X-35 is 23rd June 2001

On October 26th 2001 it was chosen over the X-32 as the winner in the Joint Strike Fighter competition and became known as the F-35 (almost 17 years ago).
